Mine had the louvres taken off before I bought the car. They keep it up unless it's really cold out.
AMC/Jeep gauges are for amusement only. Any correlation between them and reality is purely coincidental!

I still have my original hatch supports but they would not support my hatch any longer so I had to replace them with after market ones till I locate another nos one. I have one nos  one but still looking for the second.

I changed my lift supports about 10 years ago, and shortly after I did, one of my hatch hinges cracked, most likely because of the added stress from the new supports. My supports no longer keep the hatch up without help from a rod I keep in the cargo area. Only on a really hot day (90F+) will they hold it up without help. I haven't put new ones on in fear of cracking the hinges again.

Ours had the original units still on it, but when the she got cracked in the head with the hatch they had to go. The ones that were on it were still barely holding it up with a false sense of ability.

I replaced mine with aftermarkets about 4 years ago.  They no longer support the hatch unless its a hot day.

Mine only holds if it's warm

I'm afraid to replace them for fear of busting a hatch hing that's made of unobtainium

I cut a piece of 1/2" PVC pipe and it works great, I'm used to it
