Swapping to HEI and mechanical Carter. Questions
« on: April 18, 2014, 11:35:11 AM »
Topic says it all pretty well. Swapping to HEI and a mechanical Carter today. Before I prance out and start gutting what can I remove?

Vacuum lines are going to go.

Do I need to do the ECM Test bypass?

Do I need the old icm on the fender?  I know I can toss the distributor and coil.

I see a few write ups but none address this.

First make sure the carb is unplugged with the key turned on (before running) before you rip the other stuff apart. That way it's set in the center.

I have a mechanical Carter.  The computer controlled is being replaced.

The car doesn't run atm. Something in the ignition is shot thus the HEI replacement.

I'll wing it from a wiring diagram:

You'll need to focus on the power connector (two wire) for the old Duraspark box. Red is the correct ignition feed on at start and run, white is on at start only. I would use a relay on the red wire to feed power to the new module.

Remove the "I" connector from the solenoid and tape it up. Remove the wires from the coil and tape them up. Remove the coil. Remove the three-wire connector from the Duraspark box and tape it up. Remove the Duraspark box.

Follow the install instructions from the HEI kit using your own new wiring. You've bypassed the ignition signal for the MCU and it will never know the engine is running. Removing anything else is optional.

So the ECM Test bypass isn't needed for an HEI distributor and mechanical Carter.

Works for me.

That's correct. You will need to manually adjust timing, etc after.
