I finally got my idle figured out.  Seems I adjusted myself way out there.  I swapped in another carb that came in a box of spare parts (laying in a box for at least 10 years).  Sprayed it out with carb cleaner, put it on car without adjusting anything, car runs better than ever. 

I adjusted the transmission rod, and it now shifts at a higher rpm.   The car is more fun than ever to drive!

I found a brand new one in my collection but it won't work with the Lokar cable I plan to put in IF I don't swap an AW4 in.
AMC/Jeep gauges are for amusement only. Any correlation between them and reality is purely coincidental!

I had the same problem with my SX/4.  I think it was Carnuck who suggested adjusting the downshift linkage rod.  The car at full throttle used to shift at about 2500 rpm from 1st to 2nd.  I lengthened the downshift linkage rod  probably an inch or so and now it shifts at 4800 rpm.

Wow!  I don't think I've ever had my Eagle anywhere near 4800 rpm.  I didn't know the 258 was capable of revving that high lol

Before I got the linkage rod adjusted my goal was to get it to shift at 5000.  I figured with the mods I made to the motor including stronger valve springs, retainers and locks it should be capable of that.  After I adjusted the rod and it shifted at 4800 it sounded like it was winding pretty good  so I decided 4800 was good enough and I would leave it there.  It pulled strong all the way up to that RPM.
