Stupid Transmission Question
« on: May 27, 2013, 03:44:53 PM »
I changed the speedo gear on one of my wagons and need to know, Is that regular ATF that ran out or should I be filling that section of the transmission with something else? What came out looked like gear lube and it was not pretty. If that part of the transmission does have a different fluid, where is it filled at?

What year is your wagon?  I know my 81 Eagle service manual calls for 10W-30 in the transfer case where the speedo gear is.  There's a plug on the back of the transfer case to fill that area.  You may want to remove the lower plug and change all the oil first.

Thanks Billman.  Well, I made some modifications to the Holley carb per Clifford's instructions and it was running beautifully as far as I could tell from what little I drove it but unfortunately  I had to put it in storage for the summer shortly after that!

Thank you DaemonForce now I gotta wonder guess I'll check on that before I get to far. I don't think there is a huge difference in viscosity between ATF and 10w 40 but like I said the fluid that came out was like 80w and old as if it were factory installed.

I cringe when I hear of differential gear oil being used in our transfer cases. I'm guessing someone put it in there because lower-viscosity lubricants leaked out too quickly.

Regardless...and I know I'm typing the obvious...that stuff needs to go. I've seen engine oil and ATF used in chain-drive transfer cases, and I see no problem in using either one. The transmission and transfer case do not share the same fluid.

If it leaks chances are good it leaks from either or both of the output shaft seals. It's a relatively easy fix that doesn't require removing the transfer case. :eagle:
