how hard is it to adjust the bands on a 998 transmission namely the one for first gear and are there any special tools required to do so? also do you adjust them?

If the trans is also wishy/washy in reverse then it's the first/reverse clutches AND the one way sprague going bad. Manually shifting to first for take off solidly engages first gear. If it slips then either you are low on fluid (check it in neutral after warming up) or possibly something else is bad (rear axle hub spline stripped and spinning is common. I did it 3 times so far, which is why I change out the 2 piece M15/D35 right away)
AMC/Jeep gauges are for amusement only. Any correlation between them and reality is purely coincidental!

the transmission is a brand new rebuild but the shop didn't adjust it properly and it has plenty of fluid as it is at the full line when hot. i just need to adjust it enough to get Survivor to the shop so that they can adjust it properly. and thank you jurjen for the link it should help me.

Just got done using the link in this write up to adjust the bands. It looked like it might be a tough job. But it was pretty easy. Now I have the confidence that the job is done correctly. So now the bands are adjusted and the fluid and filter is changed. Took a test run and everything is working great. Also I may have sealed up the tranny leak. No puddle under the Beagle yet.
