hail damage...any suggestions
« on: June 08, 2012, 02:18:48 AM »
Yesterday we had a horrible storm with tornados in areas and some very large hail....the minute the hail started a rushed outside with pillows and blankets to throw over my car....unfortunately I was not quick enough. My poor old car really took a beating...most the dents are pretty shallow but a few are pretty bad....I plan on repainting the car in the near future and I was wondering if there's any tricks to popping  some of these things out.

How does dry ice remove dents?   I have never heard of this before (never had hail that I am aware of around here).

Bummer about the hail damage. You all know I keep my baby outside...no room in the garage...and I start sweating bullets everytime it storms around here. We've had a couple hail storms, but none with hail big enough to hurt my bird.

Saw some crazy photos from that Storm that went through CO. You guys got hit hard. Hail damage is my biggest fear, hope it never happens.

the irony is i'm not that far from them and all we saw here is a whole lot of wind and nothing else.

I thought I read in Popular Mechanics once about using vacuum to remove dents. The thing they showed was about 2 foot square and hooked to an industiral vaccuum source. They stuck it to the hood and roof and let it sit for 15-20 minutes. Some dents pulled out all the way and others were greatly reduced. Kind of a neat article. Gosh that must have been a couple of years ago though.

Also the dry ice works in combination with a hot air gun. Heat it a little first, then shock it with the dry ice. Some dents will come out with the heat since it expands the metal to relax it.

If it's real bad, you can always label it as a Golf!  :o

I've heard of a similar trick.  Heat the area up with a hair dryer, then spray the area with a compressed air can upside down (cooling effect).  The combination of heat then cold is supposed to pop the dent out.

the irony is i'm not that far from them and all we saw here is a whole lot of wind and nothing else.

I'm also glad that nothing horrible ran through the Boulder area.

Sorry to hear about the damage though, Shanebo.
