Where to find Front wheel bearings?
« on: March 14, 2012, 11:12:22 PM »
 :help:
Apparently no stores here in town have what I need and I can't seem to really find much on the net.
I am needing front bearings. And from what I am seeing in the Eaglepedia (http://www.amceaglenest.com/~iowaeagl/guide/index.php?title=Front_Wheel_Bearings) is that I will need inner and outer wheel bearings  ???
I found the front outers on RockAuto:
TIMKEN Part # SET26 Front Outer
I am not having any luck at finding the inner wheel bearings.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I believe the bearings are interchangable. I have never purchased any but I have disassembled them and regreased the bearings and reassembled with new seals. There was a thread that listed the parts needed, for a  rebuild, with the part numbers.

Timken-Set26, AMC-3238136, Federal Mogul-A40, SKF- BR26, Sealed Powered-FS40, L&S Bearing-S40 & S126.

Front Wheel Seal, Inner (2 per axle)

Front Wheel Seal, Outer (2 per axle)

Hope this helps.  From the info I've gathered, these are for Eagle's 80-88.

I believe some 80-81 cars used a "Non-replaceable" ball bearing that was supposed to be replaced with the knuckle as a unit.

I just hand my left front one replaced, and there was only a delay in getting the parts ordered.

You can rebuild the early ball bearing hubs with the later roller bearings.  I think Jim did that a while back.

Ok, I am really REALLY lost, so I hope someone can clarify.

RockAuto and Autozone list the TIMKEN Part # SET26 Front Outer as the wheel bearings I would need.
BUT when you look up the component pieces of a set 26, it doesn't match at all - the bearing and race combo is shown under #Set24 in the Timken book.  ???! The 4946 and 4910 line up with set 24, the set 26 shows these as bearing and race - J15585/15520. Could Timken have the set wrong, and thus so does anyone that sells Timken number based items?

I was told most (if not all) bearings have JML104946 stamped into them.
Inner and outer seals:
2 cones (bearings) Timken number JLM104946
2 cups (races) Tinken number JLM104910 Z
Is this correct?

I am still confused. I read LaGuardi's Rebuilt hubs thread and he said he used the Timken #set26. But as my above post states it seems to be wrong.
Can someone chime in please?  ???

SET 26 is correct -- you may want to notify Timken of their error.  Is the catalog they are using a brand new one?  I doubt it, but maybe the SET 24 supersedes the SET 26?
