I thought of that myself recently and wrote to a manufacturer online that makes kits for Jeeps (505 performance). They do make a kit but you'll have to swap to a higher CFM carb like a Holley. Here is the email and there response below.

Yes we do make a custom kit but u must use a AED holley carb and special intake for blow Thru style turbo/carb

Hello,
Do you make a turbo kit for the 4.2L 258 I6 that AMC put out? I have an 82 motor
that I'd like to turbo but I can't seem to find a kit anywhere for it. I know
that a 4.0L head will swap onto the 4.2L block but I'd rather keep the existing
head to keep my costs down a bit. I'm also planning to install a Motorcraft 2100
or 2150 carb to simplify the fuel system a little. Any help will be appreciated!

Ive seen it done on 4.0 jeeps...Ill bet if you did a 4.0l head with performance EFI swap first...which gains alot of power in itself, and then turboed it that thing could really turn some numbers
AMC, serving up heaping helpings of AWESOME since 1954

i dont think the stock engine will hold up to high boost without some building. However, 258s in some form have been turbo charged. AMC had the last expirmental  amx fitted with a moded 258 / mechanical turbo efi and pulled 500hp.

thanks thats awesome i was thinking of something like nissan did with the skylines with the 2.6l straight 6 twin turbo with the first 3 cylinders running one turbo and the same with the other 3 as shown in the link below iv also seen honda civics with a 4 cyl pull 800hp with a single turbo.

seems to me the insane inline died and the common assumption was cam failure. not 100 percent sure on the why but i do remember for sure reading it died and no one would say why. also, people have turbo'ed many a 4.0, and with three wires to live or whatever they say, itd be a little more work for better gains.
