Double groove pulley?

I know the consensus is to get an alternator bracket to and remove the A/C compressor to do the bypass. What if you just used a double groove pulley off a Ford and a shorter belt like a 17360, or whatever length it would be?

to go on the alternator. It looks like if the pulley was about half an inch forward it would line up, so I thought perhaps a double groove pulley would work. Something like: http://store.alternatorparts.com/partno242106.aspx Most GM and Ford pulleys interchange, and the inner diameter of this one will. I'm sure there are GM alternatives as well

I have one partly installed. Lost the lower alternator bolt somewhere. I need to buy a belt. Looks like a 17380 would fit after measuring. Also mocked it up with the old belt that went to the AC, looks straight. Was the lower alternator belt a 5/16 x 4"?

It works well. The double groove pulley and belt number 174000. Let me know if someone needs assistance locating a pulley they were used from 1965-1995 commonly found on Ford alternators. Installation is simple. Remove Ac and components. Pull the alternator (not required, just easier). Remove the idler, otherwise it will get in the way. Remove the one bolt with washer from the pulley. Pull the pulley and spacer off. Install the new pulley, do not use the spacer (should be obvious). Slide the belt over the crank and then over the alternator. Now install the alternator. If you install the alternator first, it kind of hard to get the belt on because the alternator does not move enough to slide the belt over the pulley. The belt is firm as it should be when it all together. This works on the I6 engines.

I'm working on the same thing on another thread.  Ref.:  "The double groove pulley and belt number 174000."  Is the 174000 the belt number for pulley to alt.?  Are those Ford pulleys stand alone pulleys or are they attached to the Ford alt.?

You can order a pulley by itself. The number is the belt number, you could go a little smaller on that, like a 17395 or 17390, that will allow for some extra tension, the 17400 works, but is a little loose for my taste.

     Would that pulley you refer to have a mounting bracket on it or is it just the pulley only?  If the latter, how would it be mounted to the 258?

Remove the existing pulley from your alternator. Put the new pulley in its place. Run a belt from the crank to the alternator. No other brackets or parts are needed; just a pulley and a belt.
