Window motor works, cable torques but something's frozen
« on: May 23, 2022, 08:22:47 AM »
Any tricks to getting the "gears" unfrozen? The motor works, and i can definitely feel the cable torque. It's whatever the sealed housing that the cable connects to that won't budge. That part inside the door frame is hidden and I'm not going to drill out rivets (yet). Thoughts on how to unfreeze that part? I've sprayed WD-40 on every pivot point of the window mechanisms.

My 1982 service manual is pre-power windows so I can't identify the part to even know what to call it.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

No tricks that I know of.  I recently gutted all of my waggie doors due to dragging windows.  Was a multitude of dried up grease everywhere causing my issues.  I soaked the regulator in my parts washer for a week to get all the dried crud out of the gears, and removed all the tracks to clean them up.  Greased everything with silicone grease and reassembled -- what a difference!!   Also replaced the window channel weatherstrips while it was apart.

Dang it, sounds like I can't short-cut this repair. Thanks for the in-depth answer.

Also replaced the window channel weatherstrips while it was apart.

Where did you pick up the weatherstrips?  Thanks

From Peter Stathes at https://www.amcrambler.com/

They don't have the molded corners like the originals, but they work.
