ANYONE A 242 expert and done the eagle swap

so im looking for a np242..and its very difficult to find one in a vehicle thats older than 93. from what i understand my stock transfer case can easily swaped with an early 242. but all i can find are np242j laying around in sheds without no years marked on them. so who here is a np242 expert?

You might check with Mick, I think he used a 242 in his wagon.

1988 - 1991 models used a speedo cable, after that they went to an electric square wave speed sensor.  This should help you at least rule out '92 and up cases.

You can swap the speedo setup easy enough.
AMC/Jeep gauges are for amusement only. Any correlation between them and reality is purely coincidental!

yeah the length and sline count is what i was being cautious about. i figure the red tags without the J after 242 means its the older one which is hard to find even on the bidding site. ill keep digging though. good to know that the speedos are switchable. anyone know if i need a 90 degree adapter for the speedo in order to clear then tranny tunnel?

A member here, I won't use his name, used a later 242 with the shorter input. He did this several years ago before the Nest and didn't know there were any differences. He found out when he went to fill the transmission and fluid was leaking out of the weep hole between the the transmission and transfer case. He plugged the weephole, filled up the transmission and has been driving it like that for over 10 years.  ;D

Just in case anybody is reading this in the future, I posted a solution for using the later 242's with the shorter input in this thread:  http://forums.amceaglesden.com/index.php?topic=46609.0

There are extension seals available that relocate the seal further out from the transmission, so the short shaft will seal properly.
