I am building a rally car out of a 1979 AMC Spirit with the VW/Audi EA831 engine. The crux of it is that the car came with a wheeze-bag auto trans. I've searched the internet high and low looking for the bellhousing which mated the EA831 to the BorgWarner HR1 trans. The BW HR1 is also known as the FOG (Ford of Germany) or the Type E. Finding a performance oriented trans is not a problem but I would like to find an original bellhousing. The EA831 uses the Audi bolt pattern (same as the inline 5 cylinder) which is not the same as the VW EA827 (all modern water cooled VWs and Audis). The VW EA831 was also used in the Porsche 924s but they implemented a transaxle configuration (bellhousing to torque tube to rear mounted transmission/differential). These engines were also used in the VW LT28 and the Jeep DJ5G but the LT28, while available as an manual has a one piece bellhousing to trans and the DJ5Gs are all autos. The pattern was also used in 5 cylinder Audis but they also only use one piece bellhousing/trans combinations. I have the AMC 121 TSM supplement for the EA831 and it shows the bell housing as a separate piece. So far the only solution is to buy a Quicktime bellhousing custom made to fit to a VW EA831 engine and a Ford/BW Type E trans but they are expensive.
