"Proper" fuel pump?

I remember seeing somewhere that there is a low-output and a high-output fuel pump for the 6cyl Eagles... mine is bad and I want to avoid buying the wrong one. Anyone out there know about this -- or perhaps have a part number?  (I have an 81 SX/4) I searched the forum but didn't find a thing.

Never heard of such a thing. At first glance I.nz noticed the oil filter listing does not mention years. It should as 87 is different.

I put a Carter fuel pump on my 83 Eagle about two years ago. #C44M6737

It works, it's blingy, it stays clean and I don't worry about it giving trouble.

I was only saying that to mention use care. I thought the older motors were different as well.

Thanks guys! I bought one at the local Zone and installed with no problems. Not sure if it WORKS yet though, as I'm bending the fuel line into a better configuration. Hopefully I'll get to finish this monstrous task by Christmas *insert sarcastic icon here*

Avoid the Fram filters. Low material and build quality.
Go for the WIX (also sold as NAPA Gold & Carquest) or Purolator.

The low (regular) volume ones are for cars without a fuel return line from the filter back to the tank. The high volume ones account for the extra gas that goes back to the tank instead of to the carb. This is to help keep down the temperature of the fuel under the hood to prevent vapour lock.

The low-output pump must be early! AMC used return filters on most cars by at least the mid-70's. I would suspect that the low-output would be hard to find.

Would the 4 cylinders use the same style fuel pump?  I'm pretty sure the 4 cylinder eagles don't have fuel return lines.

The AMC 4 cyls use the 3 line filter with carbs (84-86)

Hello,  I realize this is an old post, but I have to ask :  As long as the carb bowl stays full of fuel does fuel pump pressure really matter with a BBD ( carb ) equiped Eagle ?    Iron Horse

You mean like a gravity fed carb. I seen it work when it was needed.

              Right .. a Carter BBD would work if the gas tank was above it .. float / needle valve controls the fuel flow into the bowl.  Like my Farmall H, it has no fuel pump but the tank is above the carb.  A gas can you strap on the roof with enough hose to reach the carb would work in an emergency .. watching too much "prepers" .
