someday, I would love to get ahold of a 4.6 and see how it would work around here.  I bet you guys down south have tons of mods on these motors - Or are they the same mods that we have?

The Grand Wagoneer 360, unless swapped out, will be an AMC 360 which was NOT built by Mopar! (they killed the line in '91 when they ran out of AMC blocks cast prior to that)
AMC/Jeep gauges are for amusement only. Any correlation between them and reality is purely coincidental!

isthat a reason why the 258 lived on until 1990 in the yj?

The 4.2 ran in the YJs till emissions killed it and they went 4.0 HO Chrysler efi in '91.
