Loose/too much play steering

      I realize "loose" is a relative term but after I got my 84' from pulling to the left [also involving some negative camber issues], in my opinion, there is too much play in the steering - maybe 2 inches right or left from 12 O'clock. 
      Per the manual, as I understand it,  the screw and lock nut on top of the steering gear should not be casually messed with.
       Advise, tips, info appreciated.

Usual issue is a wasted pitman arm.  Lightly rock the steering back and forth, and check for play in the pitman joint.  Look for worn tie rod ends while you're at it.

I just bought a new idler from that Evil place on-line (actually 2) and while they aren't top quality (Chinese knockoff with Moog part numbers) it'll be fine for when I need it. I already have new swaybar endlinks (with poly bushings) from 4wheel parts and new strut rod bushings from Napa (not the Moog poly ones with 1 piece sleeve I wanted though) I'll be changing to 2wd upper control arms soon (to get 3" more front lift) and Chev S10 front axles.
   If you find the play is in the steering box, it can be adjusted or replaced with many other Jeep steering boxes. I have a 4 bolt box from a Grand Wagoneer I plan to install.
AMC/Jeep gauges are for amusement only. Any correlation between them and reality is purely coincidental!
