I'm currently on vacation in the Shuswap region of British Columbia. The past two days have been a gold mine of sightings.
During the drive here on Saturday, I was paying attention to the road of course but also trying to spot AMCs in my peripheral vision. I was finally rewarded with two sightings in the final stretch of the seven hour journey.
First I spied an Eagle wagon (with a For Sale sign on it), then just a couple of miles further I saw a '68 or '69 Rebel two door partially hidden among some trees in a yard.
On Sunday, my family went and did their own thing so I went and did my own thing... a day trip to Kelowna to hit the Pick-n-Pull. On my way there I wanted to stop and get pictures of the Eagle and Rebel (with the owners' permission if possible). I ended up blowing right past the Rebel but did get to talk to a guy about the Eagle, and got permission to open the hood and doors and take lots of pictures. I'll have to wait until I get home to post those. I didn't get the seller's contact info (guy I talked to was a friend of his), but I left mine with him.
From there I continued my journey to Kelowna, and due to construction on Highway 97 I somehow got detoured through Armstrong. This cost me some time, but it wasn't a total loss. I ended up stumbling across a very nice unrestored '79 Concord wagon parked on a street. Got a few pictures of that. Also spotted a '70s or maybe early '80s full size Wagoneer, but got no pictures.
Got to Kelowna and hit the Pick-n-Pull, found no AMC products in the yard other than four full size Jeeps ('77 J10, two '81 Wagoneers, '88 Grand Wagoneer). The two '81 Wagoneers were sitting side by side and both interiors were completely gutted and trashed - but both still had good three-spoke sport steering wheels. I also got a power mirror switch out of one. Elsewhere I stumbled across some Chrysler police hubcaps for possible eB_y fodder, and that was the extent of my purchases. I was sitting in the parking lot ready to back out and leave, facing the fence... and through the slits in the fence I saw a familiar roofline. I got out and looked closer... yup, a Hornet hatchback sitting in the staging area, waiting to be processed and moved into the yard. I asked if there was any chance of it being bought whole, and was met with a flat-out "no".
If I were actually local to the area and had a chance of acquiring it, I might have tried to be more persuasive... because I suspect it could be bought if one were to flash some cash. Money talks, as they say. By the way, the Hornet was a '75 as far as I could tell, kind of a burnt orange color and had a full length white and red stripe indicating it may have been an "X" model. Who knows, possibly a factory V8 car? If anyone out there is in the Kelowna, BC area this is worth investigating and possibly saving! Act fast before it gets processed and placed in the yard, though. I got no pictures of the Hornet.
Still five days of vacation to go.
