Front end noise?
« on: June 24, 2011, 09:58:31 PM »
My 83 SX/4 has developed a "hum", sounds like it is coming from the front right. Sounds like a tire rub or the same sound as an aggressive snow tire on pavement. Brakes are fine, wheel bearings seem to be fine, no slop, steering components are ok. raising the front and spinning the wheels the only sound comes from the front right some where near the differential.
Possible half shaft problem??

Hum begins at 10mph and remains at all speeds, really not increasing with speed, trans in neutral, still has same hum.
103k miles, everything original, just began 2 weeks ago, quit driving then.
Rear wheel bearings appear to be ok.
Advise??

You were correct Jayramb, some of the bearing rollers "didn't roll"!  Cost $100.80 to disassemble, pack and reasemble hub after arguing with ASE Certified mechanic and former AMC shop mechanic that hub was rebuildable! (I provided bearings and seals), still waiting on O rings from the store.

still waiting on O rings from the store.

I was told the O rings weren't necessary.
