I just acqired a 1986 wagon. Ive been advised this year was the one with the open diff transfer case. I really know nothing of it except that no one speaks very highly of it...How does it work?  ???

Uses a differential like you axles to send power to both the front and rear drive shafts when in 4x4. However, when you loose traction, the power is sent to the axle, (and then the wheel on that axle) with the least amount of friction/traction. So essentially you lose 4x4 when you need it the most.  If they had used limited slip differentials in the axles, then it would have been a better design.

Is this the np 128?
I have heard you can use your brakes to get traction with an open dif.

@Shanebo,

You got the same year eagle as I do.  You got the 128 case.  That's the only year it came in.

If you can find one, look for the 129 case.  it's the better of the two.
