Looking for a quiet performance muffler
« on: March 24, 2011, 08:10:48 PM »
I want to get rid of the cherrybomb, I want something that is still fairly high flow, but much quieter, I'd much rather enjoy the hour drive to Denver every weekend than get out and wish the headache would go away. My exhaust is 2.5"... I've been told Borla mufflers are good. I know flowmasters are too but are also loud. I want somethign that won't produce too much backpressure (some is good) but also either has a relatively quiet tone or directs the noise straight out of the exhaust and away from the car (like a sportbike muffler does). Any suggestions?

flowmaster makes three different sound levels. have you checked out their quietest? it still supposed to be a performance muffler. maybe still too loud for you.

Magnaflow will not get another dime from me because they are somehow still allowed to sell their S#$% catalytic convertors, mine burned out with just a few thousand miles on it

I may check into flowmaster, also considering contacting Borla. Keep the suggestions coming :) Once I replace my manifold I'll have an easier time making up my mind. I like the top end power but wouldn't mind losing a small portion of that for a little more low end (not that it doesn't have enough, but it has plenty) and more importantly, better gas mileage.

I have a Hooker Muffler on my 258 79 AMX and it is VERY quiet in the cab, but out behind the car you can hear it.  No drone on the highway either... it's almost TOO quiet but has performed well over 5 years.

Don't remember the name of the series, but it is black and looks the shape of a stock muffler.

A few years back one of the Pontiac guys ran a whole bunch of mufflers to test noise and found that Summit brand turbo mufflers were just about the best for the $ considering noise and flow, and you still get some of that rumble, I had them on my Pontiac.

Here's an article of some early results. He published more detailed results in a book, but I don't have it available right now.

I don't have any personal experience with them, but you can check out Hushpower mufflers.  They stemmed from Flowmaster, but have a more unique design.

I have a summit turbo muffler sitting in my parts box, actually :D Suppose I'll hook that up then :)

I have the Dynomax Super Turbo from Walker (#17730), about $50.
Very quiet rumble, gets a bit louder over time, but you will not hear it inside.

I'd try a supertrapp muffler, they install as a tailpipe and you can add discs to quiet them down.  i think they are in the $250 range at summit

supertrapps are cool, I just don't have the cash to spend on that right now :( That same amount of money would get me all new front end bushigns and new coil springs....
