The SX/4 is steadily consuming vast amounts of U.S. currency. The first thing I did to the car after it came home was to change the valve cover and this is a shot while the work was in progress.

This is what it looks like now ???

I hope to have it all back together soon (I said that about 3 weeks ago too) and will provide an update once it is done.
Hey Smitty! Somebody took your engine! What a great opportunity to take care of other issues from the windshield forward.
Its all so a good time to clean and check the condition of the wire harness.
I don't see any vacuum hoses coming off your idle selonoid!! Is yours electric only, or am I just blind?
Smitty took my engine. just joking is that 4 cylinder or streight 6 cylinder
The idle solenoid is unhooked in that pic cause the carter was on there just to move it around. It is now running the motorcraft carb. BTW it is a 258 under all that crap.
Nice work. Can't wait to see it when it is finished. By the way that reminds me I am not sure whether I posted pictures of the finished product when I rebuilt my engine. I will have to check on that.
where you get that cool carb with the wires going into it, i have a 82 and have the wires but the carb aint got no wire hole in it to plug that plug into..

Sounds like you are talking about the feedback carb. And, it sounds like you have the non feedback version which many here would say you have a good thing. And, if you have a non feedback version then more than likely you have had the computer bypassed and many here will add, leave well enough alone as you are envied by many.
i was thinking if im gonna get it to pass emissions i might need to get one of them, and what ever else i need, is the computer inside the cockpit and does a big green plug go into it, with i think 8 or 10 large silver pins on it? because i have one big plug with nothing attached to it up by behind the stereo area.
The computer is hidden behind the passenger side kick panel. Typically, the bypass is done under the hood.
maybe i still have that in there then! i will have to check. still wondering what that big green plug is for tho.
Do you have a picture of the big green plug?

Those may help. Now to dig through the schematics as I don't recall seeing that one when I have had things torn apart. It does look factory.
i have a kind of dumb question, did the eagles or sx4 come with any motor bigger than the 258?if not is there a DIRECT bolt in motor that uses the same tranny? like the 401 or 360 for example
I believe the 304 and the 360 are direct swaps minus needing brackets to mount the front axle
The 258 was the biggest engine in production Eagles. Any Gen I, II or III AMC V8 will mate up with our automatic transmissions or I-6 bell housing. You need to use the V8 flywheel for that engine as they are externally balanced. The easiest way to gain more HP is to use a Jeep 4.0 either as is or in combination with the 258 crankshaft and rods to build yourself a stroker.
You are right about the Gen I motors. Fuzzy brain that day. Gen II & III are the ones you want.
