Title: 1980 Limited wagon
Post by: Jawbone1021 on May 12, 2025, 12:06:10 AM
This is my 1980 AMC Eagle Limited wagon. Finally posting a project thread for this.
It's mostly original, aside from some small things and maybe the paint, although I'm not sure.
When it works, it works okay. When it breaks, it's usually minor.
My first real project car. Done some work to it, including but not limited to replacing the windshield seal, rebuilding the carb, redoing the headliner, fixing the door handles (mostly), redoing the vacuum lines, putting in a new thermostat, stuff like that. Small but helps a lot.
It needs new tires because it sat for around 20 years before I got it. The windshield is also cracked as of this fall. It needs some minor cosmetic parts, like the rear filler panel. The sunvisors were also missing when I got it.
The interior's really nice and I have a ton of factory documentation. Reply to ask for certain pictures because I'm not going to fill the page with them. The interior shot is from before I did any work to it and the exterior shot is before I washed it.

Thanks for checking this thread out. Tell me if you have any suggestions or comments.

Looks like a nice car! Sure don't see many 80 Limiteds.

Thank you!
I don't see many 1980s or Limiteds, so both in one is cool.

I've been looking for a 1980 rear valance but I think it's an impossible task... Mine disintegrated long ago and I think it really hurts the look of the car having a big gap there. If anyone finds or sees on for sale please let me know. Thanks

A few more questions. What tires (in what sizes) do y'all run? I kinda want some all terrains but I don't know. And I'm dealing with some sort of battery drain so I was wondering if any of you knew any Eagle specific causes for that. I was also wondering how to fix my driver door handle. The clip inside broke so I replaced it but now there's a piece of metal that's bent inside the door. What should I do about that?

If you don't want to do any trimming, I think a 205/75R15 would probably be the biggest you could go. I've got 225/75R15s with a 2" lift and some trimming.
Somewhere on here is a thread about doing repairs in the door with a handle swap.
Where in MN are you? I'm from WI, over near La Crosse.

I would love to find one of those bumper filler pieces myself, but unfortunately those are made of unobtainium.

I wonder if a 3d printer could copy them?

3D printing is what I was thinking, however they are quite long and my guess that it would need to be scanned and printed in several pieces.

There are 3D printers that are big enough to print them in one piece but they're also really expensive.

Just another idea for having the part made.
It might be possible to have a tech school or engineering department at a local college or trade school make them too. A nephew of mine was able to make a bunch of different things and offered to make a few parts for my Eagle when he was in College.

And of course the 1980 units are slightly different from 1981 to '88 so they're even harder to find

I found a 1980 Eagle 4 door sedan in the junkyard today and the rear valance had been cut out. There were some pieces left on the sides but nothing usable.

Probably just fell apart like mine. Every time I wash it I find another chunk on the ground.
Cadillacs had that problem too.

I have four Eagles and two Concords. One of those has very fragile filler piece. It is like glass. But five other fillers are soft and flexible almost like new ones...

Did AMC use different type of plasticmaterials?

My friends Kammback´s bumper ends are like glass... and broken in many pieces...
