Title: Transmission linkage keeps coming apart.
Post by: tgotr on May 18, 2022, 04:08:18 PM
On my '84 Eagle, the shift lever keeps coming apart. Looks like there was supposed to be a C-Clip holding it to the transmission lever. I've ordered a new rubber grommet from RA. Is that all I need? Is there supposed to be a C-Clip or something that holds it together?

Also how do I align the shifter? It only works when it shows between gears.

I apologize if what I am posting is unintelligible, I currently have a concussion caused by the Eagle.

Eagle got ya good, eh?  I got clocked by mine once pretty good too.  It happens. :)

Been a few years but I think all that holds it on is the rubber grommet and the little divet in the arm on the transmission side.  If the grommet doesn't do it, the end of that little arm may be too rotted to hold it on anymore.  Might need a new arm or build up the old one with some creative welding/hammering.

As far the shifter, I found this in the den: https://forums.amceaglesden.com/index.php?topic=41933.0  About halfway in, eagle87 says: "ive had this problem, and it turned out to be the short thin metal tab from the shifter lever to linkage rod was bent, even a slight bend combined with leverage can mess it up, you simply bend it while the car is on stands and have someone move the shifter untill the trans locks in park"  That might get you where you want to go.

Yea, the shifting linkage came apart, so I tried to zip tie it together, just to get home safely, but I accidentally put the transmission in Reverse while underneath, and the car almost rolled over my head. Took all my strength to hold the wheel back so I could get out from under the car.
