My luck that after doing a top-end rebuild and timing chain my damper decides it wants to stop playing nice.
My local parts supplier come up with nothing for AMC's. Napa also had nothing. Chrysler/Mopar comes up with the J3237196 but it's $150. RockAuto also has nothing for AMC's but sleeve kits.
However it's the 258, so a CJ from 1982 should be(?) spec identical and sure enough it lists in stock the 102007 from ATP and 594739 from Ultra-Power/Dorman.
I purchased the Dorman special however I can't help but notice for both parts it states it's only compatible with the 1980 model Eagle and the Spirit, Concord and AMX up to 1980 as well. Is this an error or did something change after 1980?

I did see a lot more links with searching '4.2 258' than just '258'.

I ended up using a "Dayco/Powerbond PB1440N" from RockAuto ($62) for my '83 Eagle. It was an exact-fit replacement, though I do remember having the same issue of seeing nothing listed for a 1983 in RockAutos's catalog. I just checked again and saw a cheaper comparable balancer to the PB1440N, an "Ultra-Power 594739" ($36) listed for the 1980 Eagle as well.
Either of those should work for you if you're running V-belts.

the crank balance changed for 81 and up. or something changed to make the balancer different.
I think the crank was changed from the early 4.2L cranks. That might be a reason for differing dampers. One has fewer or smaller counter weights. Making the crank itself quite a bit lighter.

This is pretty confusing. Even the year ranges for dampeners specified in the Quadratec link provided are "75-90" and "75-86". That would appear to imply that the cranks and dampeners were common all through the relevant years where our cars were built.
All I know is that P/N I specified in my earlier message (listed by RockAuto to be valid for 1980 but not beyond) was an exact copy of the worn-out one I replaced on my '83, and in addition to installing the same as the old one, was the same in appearance and all major dimensions I could check with calipers. I suppose that doesn't
necessarily mean the dampener I removed was factory, but it certainly looked ancient.
Oh it's very confusing, one of these days I need to call them, just hadn't plan to do it until some time this winter.
I am hoping it doesn't get that confusing when I go to get time chain and gears. I want to replace those too.
The Ultra-Power/Dorman 594739 came in today and from measurements:
-The new balancer weighs seven ounces more than the original
-The new balancer accessory pulley bolt holes are .04" further from the center (you will need to enlarge/oval your bolt holes to make the pulley fit.
-All other measurements are within .005" of eachother
