Title: Trans case
Post by: mazdamike on February 17, 2019, 03:06:27 PM
Been trying to manually shift my sons 85 transfer case.  Can not get the 4x4 to work.  How far does the lever travel and do I need to remove the vacuum mod.

Mine was stuck this fall and I was able to move the lever with a prybar or long screwdriver. I don't remember how much it moved but I just worked it back and forth with lube until it freed up and the vacuum actuator could handle it again.

I think I remember reading the job of moving it easier if you put a wrench on the base, maybe it a 9/16"?  Or maybe I'm totally wrong lol.

Got to move with a 9 /16 wrench. Well not engage the 4x4, plus an getting a grinding sound when in 4x4.  Could this be false neutral? If so how do I fix it?

Thank for your time

Yes to 9/16".  Grinding  makes me think not fully in yet. Have you tried neutral and moved the driveshaft a bit while moving the shifter i believe counterclockwise.

Have you checked or changed the TC oil to see if parts come out? I had one with bearings falling out. It would drive but made all kinds of noise.

No I have not, more then likely the next move going be a complete tear down. Have to wait for the dang weather to break.

I would try jacking all four wheels off the ground, safely with jackstands. Then put the transmission in neutral and while your trying to get it into 4wd, try turning either the front or rear driveshaft at the same time.
