Title: coughs spits and sputters when going into second gear
Post by: Eagle SX4 Limited on January 14, 2017, 10:07:17 AM
Hi: I am new here and looked to see if anyone was having the same problem as me. I have a 1983 SX4 258 A/T with 63K. The motor runs fine when in first gear but the minute the car shifts into second gear she loses power and I have to feather the gas pedal back and forth to get her up to speed to shift into 3rd. I recently bought the Gronk conversion and did the whole ECM Test job, because I was trying to fix this problem. The car acts the same way as it did before I put the new system in. I have not replaced the distributor yet. It either seems like the car is flooding out once it hits second gear or it is starving for gas(I can't tell which) I have had the car to two mechanics shops so far and after $50 dollars with each it still runs crappy! The timing has been set,I just don't know what else to look at. The vacuum lines have all been checked. I need someone here in MN that knows these cars an can figure this out. I bought this car because my Magnum hemi wagon gets stuck on a level surface during the winter.

is the transmission linkage hooked up to the carburetor?

Is it shifting from first to second too soon? What happens if you shift manually?

Does the same thing when shifting manualy. i did notice that it runs way worse when siting in my steep driveway! I am now starting to think that the float level in the new carb is not set right(that would explain not getting enough fuel to the engine when shifting into higher gear.

I wouldn't be shocked if you found out it was your ignition coil.

Lr it begs my attention now corroded wiring  or bad  plug wires. I mean thatissue usuaully only happens under load so when she is grunting to pull the load maybe thats why you see it there. How is 2 to 3 shift.

I am pretty sure it is not the coil. The complete gronk kit was just installed, new wires, new coil, cap, rotor, carb, air cleaner and it was ECM Test bypassed.
