Title: Stock Transmission
Post by: Blue4Door1985 on October 02, 2016, 05:08:21 PM
I have an '85 Eagle with the stock automatic transmission for the 258. How much horsepower can the stock transmission take? I'm not planning anything crazy, just maybe somewhere in the 330 - 350 hp range. I also wonder if I have to worry about the front differential

Thanks,

Hi, a properly built TQ 998, which is the transmission you have, is very tough, and can take a lot of power. The real question is, how are you going to get 300-350hp to it? good luck, gz

I would agree, though 350hp is at the upper echelon of what the 998 can handle. I wouldn't try getting that out of a worn 30 year old transmission, but it would be fine with a performance built 998.

Keep in mind, the stock carbed 258 only gets 110-120hp max. I'm guessing you plan to do a stroker if you want to keep the stock trans and 4wd.
