Title: Mirror fixing?
Post by: Nightpath on March 31, 2015, 06:58:38 PM
My mirrors are loose and well. .. crappy. I actually think my drivers side one is broken. ..

Is there any known fixes to tighten them up?

I thought there was a better write-up, on one of the two forums, but I cant find it. hope this helps though

there was a better write up to fix the actual mirror. I never did, but memory says there is a screw or screws to tighten under the mirror

the cables become dry and people don't lubricate them. I had one basically frozen on one of my Eagles. I broke one of the cables and it wobbled. The current Eagle I have, as a daily driver, not Ella, had one frozen as well on the passenger side. I took bar and chain lube, Napa brand, sprayed the heck out of it, an it is like brand new! Lube up those side mirrors.

Yes, there is a screw you can tighten. You can reach it between the bottom of the glass and the housing IIRC.

JayRamb describes a different problem, where the housing is stable but the glass flops around inside. Now you have tips to solve both problems.

Sweet. I knew I read it at one point but I couldn't remember.

I think my driver's side is snapped though. It was frozen and I pushed on it not thinking...

Grab a product called Kable-Ease at the hardware store and run it through the cables. It's messy, fair warning, lol.

If the cables just got stretched out and not broken, you can try unscrewing the mirror housing from the door, twisting it a couple times, and screwing it back on.  It helped with my mirrors.

What can be done if a cable is snapped? Mine was frozen (winter storms) and it :censored: me off so I manhandled it.

On a related note, for the passenger mirror...wwhat is used to secure the adjuster into the dash? Removed mine and now I can't remember what 1 of the pieces look like.

Try what I suggested before you accept that the cable is fully broken.
If you did snap the cable, your best bet is to find a new mirror with a good cable.  Depending on where it broke, you might be able to fix it, but it would be very difficult.

There is a silver ring thing that screws onto the adjuster.  You can see it in the attached picture

I have the silver ring but there is something behind the dash that aligns it. I can't remember what it is

I took a 2nd look, and it appears that there is something that screws onto the adjuster behind the dash before the ring that goes through screws on. I can't remember what that particular piece is or looks like.

I seem to be missing #9 in this diagram.

Looks like I have some searching to do.

If you don't have it, the control handle will flop around in the dash. Mine fell into the rail behind the dash and took a bit to fish it out.

I have that piece in my toolbox if you need a photo of it.

A photo would be fantastic. I totally removed mine, now I can't find it at all.

Le sigh.

I might have that piece available, if somebody posts a photo I can go fishing for mine.  I removed my remote control mirrors and I don't think I threw anything away.

I came across mine yesterday around supper on accident. When I saw it, I suddenly realized what it was and pewped a bit in joy.

Thanks for the pic to confirm I had the right part!

Now all I need is a new driver's side mirror.
