Since I took a cruise along the highway in my 86 Wagon, I realized that it needs a bit of attention in the area of sound proofing. I don't have some of the interior in it yet (going to soda blast and repaint properly). This summer I'm re-gutting the interior and going to spend a few days going through it again in order to dampen the ambient hurricane noise when I drive.
Besides the floor, which I've laid Ayrfoil on, along with a new carpet, I've been wracking my mind thinking of places and ways to soundproof.
Floors : Ayrfoil / carpet. Ayrfoil is a silver "bubblewrap" type of material. It's proved to work nicely on the floor.
Ceiling : I think I'm going to Ayrfoil this as well before installing the headliner. Or I may spray a light rubberized sealer on the back of the headliner.
Pillars/Ceiling edges : These are all hollow, I've debated filling them with expanding foam insulation but I think that this would cause more issues than fix. I've put pipe insulators inside the hollow area along the ceiling. It may pay off more to leave these alone.
I think that spraying the back of the plastic panels with something like Leakseal ( http://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/rustoleum-clear-leak-seal-0670040p.html ) which is thin but leaves a rubberized type coating would stop a bit of sound and work nicely. There's a lot of plastic to remove, and since I'm planning on it anyways that will be 1 route I go.
The areas that I have the most problems are :
- Doors
- Firewall
- Rear hatch area - wheel wells - the large gap from the outside of the car to the inside metal cavitates sound and the plastic that covers it does nothing.
For those areas I may have to swallow the cost of buying a spray on sealer. The old stuff in the doors is coming off in chunks so I need to replace that as well.
So what have you all done to sound dampen your Eagles?
I hate mice. The quest to eliminate the little buggers has pushed me to make sure that I remove all fabric style sound dampener.
I replace it with the "Eastwood" brand stuff. It goes on sale pretty often and when it is on sale there isn't much else similar to it that can beat the price. It is top quality and really easy to work with, which also helps to justify the cost. It is a thin foil and rubberish combination with adhesive already on it.
I'm lucky enough to have the Eastwood headquarters less than 15 minutes from my house which makes me a little bit biased. They are mostly an online only company and they do a free shipping sale about once a month it seems like, although I wish they would do a different sale since I have free shipping all year long because I live so close. They do have a really nice storefront at their headquarters for people to walk in and out from. The same brand also has a really nice selection of hobbyist paint and prep products. Their welders and plasma cutters are much cheaper and better made than any competition hobbyist grade. Their brake flare fitting vise tool is one of my top ten favorite tools of all time. That has saved me an incredible amount of time. I'm pretty happy with them.
Got a link to their site? It would be international shipping but may still be cheaper than local.

This looks like the same thing as Dynamat (butyl rubber and aluminum). What I don't understand is why Eastwood says not to use their product on the roof while Dynamat says theirs is fine for that... Adhesive not as strong?
You may also want to consider the foil covered bubble wrap such as this:
http://www.amazon.com/Reflectix-BP24050-24-Inch-50-Foot-Insulation/dp/B0009XCJA2
That's the same stuff as Ayrfoil :)
Put something in to protect from moisture or anything with the insulation will rot out. There is another brand that is cheaper than Dynamat that I can't think of the name of right now.
