I didn't think you could either. I thought they stopped making the 232 years earlier.
I just checked my manuals. '79 was the last year for the 232 (VIN Code "E"), and it was available only in the Spirit and Concord models.
Hi. Matt here. That's true. 1979 was the last AMC model year of the code E 232 I-6 motor. 1979 was also the last AMC model year for the code H 304 V-8 motor in passenger cars. I currently own here in Kenosha WI a 1979 AMC Pacer Limited Hatchback with a code C 258 I-6 motor. It is the best AMC that I have ever owned. It is Alpaca Brown with a Tan Interior. -Matt.
Hey, you learn something new every day. Thanks for setting me straight!
Thanks for the info, didn't know that.
My neighbor had a '79 2 dr sedan that was some kind of special anniversary edition that I forget the name of. It had porthole windows in the rear quarter. I rebuilt the 998 lockup trans for her (twice because the new torque converter stator was bad) That was when I bought my second Eagle for $350 in @'97.
That would be a Silver Anniversary model 79 AMC Concord commemorating AMC's 25 year anniversary from 1954-1979! -Matt.
It had a special emblem that said VIP or something like that. I was sad to find out it went to the crusher. It was immaculate with only 50,000 miles on it and garage kept. Scumbag oil change place drained her oil and sent the car out with the pressure wire pulled off.
hi, so, nobody has a 232? reason I,m asking is that my 232 Spirit has the stock Carter YF 1 bbl carb, and it runs fine. Have opportunity to get a deal on a Carter YFA from a Ford 300 cid L6, From what I've read, the Ford 300 truck carb flows around 200 cfm, while my stock carb is about 170? or so. Might be a cheap and easy (though very small) upgrade. BTW the difference afaik between the YF and the YFA is that the YFA is electric choke, and the YF is the manifold heat tube style. Any thoughts/opinions? thanks gz
My dad has a gremlin with a 232, same carb as you I think. The engine was completely wore out and had really low compression so we took it out, but it was super smooth running at one time
I would give it a try, a few more cfm's should be fine and the electric choke might be a nice upgrade!
I would take a close look at the base to see if teh bolt pattern is bigger or not. The hole the carb goes into on the intake may be a restricting point too. I'm not a big fan of 1 bbl carbs. Them and Holley 4 bbls are what I've had the worst luck with even fixing.
