Title: odd carburetor problem
Post by: maddog on September 03, 2014, 08:42:06 PM
I am having an odd issue with the carburetor in Survivor. I have completely rebuilt it and for some reason only one of the jets are working, now it was doing this before I rebuilt it. I have sprayed out all of the passages and all of them appear to be clear but for some weird reason the one jet will not work. any ideas?

are you running the stock carter?  ive seen where the Chrysler k-cars and Omni/horizons with the 2.2 liter, as well as some Toyota pickups will you use a progressive carb that will work like a four barrel, only it is a two barrel design.

Please further define what you mean by "one jet working".   Is it the accelerator pump jets??   The venturis maybe (which you shouldn't be able to see fuel coming out of anyway)??   Or??    Thanks.

The accelerator pump works like a water pistol. Push the trigger very slowly on a water pistol and water dribbles from the barrel. Push the trigger very quickly and it will shoot a stream pretty far.

If you push the accelerator linkage quickly and see a bigger stream of gas shoot out than when you push it slowly, you're looking at the accelerator pump jets. Those are supposed to be visible when they shoot. They should not be shooting any gas unless you are actively and quickly accelerating.

There is a different set of jets that actually provide the stream of fuel for the engine. You shouldn't be able to see fuel coming out of those because they are supposed to be misting it in. If a stream of gas is visible from one of those than the one you can't see is good, and the one you can see is very bad.

yes it is the stock carter. and what I mean by the one not working is that when I pump the throttle quickly I only get one stream of fuel with Survivor's carburetor but if I do this with Eagle Eyes's carburetor (also the stock carter) I get two streams.

When you pop the upper half off the carb it has a piston with a rubber seal and two rods sticking out from below it. That piston in the center is the trigger of the water pistol. It has the same piston pushing gas out both jets.

I'd guess you have a clog or obstruction out closer to the tip of the nozzle. Since one works and one doesn't it must be after they split, and that's pretty close to the tips.

I wonder if the oddball triangular gasket near there got replaced in the past by the wrong one. Most rebuilt kits come with at least two versions of that gasket because it changed slightly over the years and applications. The same size Carters were also common in other cars in several CFM ratings, up to and including V8's.

I rebuilt it a couple of days ago and I sprayed out all the passages now it is possible I missed one but I doubt it I also know that all of the gaskets are the right ones. if I have the money next week i'm going to go to the junkyard and get the carter they have sitting in one of the cars and use it for parts and see if I can't make two messed up carbs into one good one.

You can pull the 2 screws out carefully from the top (I stick a cloth in to keep it from falling too far) and remove the squirters to clean them out.
