Title: Starter not disengaging
Post by: fischrman on August 11, 2014, 04:22:38 PM
I haven't cranked my eagle in 4 yrs. finally finishing up my 727/229 conversion. When I turn the key the eagle turns over and cranks up but the starter won't disengage unless I put the shifter in rev or in plug the forward top wire (grn) on top of solenoid... I took the starter off, cleaned it and checked that the gear wasn't stuck and it did retract.   Any thoughts? Has anyone else had this issue?   I a mere few steps from having her back on the
Road and this is a road block.  Thanks in advance

Likely a solenoid issue

x2 on the solenoid being the cause. I had a brand new solenoid that would do that to me till I hit it with a wrench.

I bought a new solenoid.  I forgot to mention that.  Guess it may be faulty.  I'll try another

I'M REALY FRUSTRATED!!!!

Ive looked up so many wiring diagrams I cant see straight anymore, Ive double checked all my TFi motorcraft distributer/ignition wiring and it is all goo but the starter is still engaging after started.... the interesting thing is that if I put the shifter into gear ie R, D,2,1    the starter engages as if im turning the key. then when  put it back into neutral or park it stops turning over.... Grrrrr

its almost like a sensor is reversed. all ive done is swap the trans and tcase     it took 4 yrs but before I started it didn't have this issue PLEASE HELP1111

Try  disconnecting the nss from the solenoid. Than jus run a ground wire to that tip. That doesn't make sense to me but it sounds good. Its an easy test anyway.

Run the ground wire from the back of the solenoid in to a button on the dash.

OH! Duh! Unplug the wire on the back of the solenoid and see if it won't crank at all first. If that is the case then it's getting power from a broken NSS switch that is feeding power instead of ground to teh solenoid.

Where are you? It's likely something that can be fixed in 2 minutes if we saw it.

Just to let everyone know it ended up being a bad ICM that gave me this symptom. I replaced it and everything works good..
