I just joined here a couple weeks ago. My wife and I purchased a 84' Eagle wagon that was slated as a project vehicle off and Ebay bid that we ended up not hitting the reserve, but took second chance offer for. We had to have it shipped to our home 650miles away from NJ to Indiana.

Very nice looking Eagle man. What all does it need? Looks like a great start to a nice Daily Driver!
I have looked it over pretty well so far and it seams like it's pretty good. I ended up replacing the carb with a non eletric version of the carb that was on there it now idles very smooth and reuns better. I'm going to upgrade the ignition to a multispark ignition controller with a rev limiter along with a better coil.
Then next on the list are:
New coolant hoses
Find the squeal in the steering and repair (it's not a belt sqeal)
Repair or replace the fuel tank
Install gauges Water temp, Oil press, and Voltmeter.
New headliner
Check the small amout of rust on the under carriage
Re route vacuum lines for 4wd system PO left a little mess
Remove unneeded vacuum hoses since carb replacement
Repair AC system so it works
Add cruise control
repack bearings, change engine oil, and axle oil
Thats the short list it really isn't to bad I am a little concerned how long the trans will go but that is a common concern of mine for almost any vehicle. I've been waiting for the day the trans gives out on my Taurus and 204k miles later its still pulling like a mule, but I've never cracked it open or changed the fluid in either .
Sharp Eagle. Search for the shift on the fly mod for the front axle. It will take the front vacuum shift motor out of the equation and eliminate some vacuum lines.
Very nice eagle, I like that color, you've got a really nice one to start with for sure
Those look like rock auto boxes in the back too!
The PO included a complete new exhuast system, and a new Master cylinder. That is what is in the rock auto boxes. I'll look into the front axle mod.
It has brand new tires on it and the brakes had been gone through from what I could gather from the seller.
Thanks for the compliments. It really looked better in person that it did on ebay.
Very nice looking Eagle! Congrats and enjoy it!!
I'm putting gauges in the bird. Last week we had a little overheat problem and it had been on my to do list.

It is more complete now but the weather has been playing havoc with trying to get paint to dry today. I got it wired in and checked
I can honestly say AMC in their infinate wisdom made putting a set of gauges in to easy by leaving a place on the fuse block to plug in the 12v feed for the gauges and the dimmer feed for the gauge lights. I didn't have to splice any wire it was pretty cool. :blob1:
Grrrrreat Car!!! Love the two-tone! Keep 'er up!
Thanks We loved the color of the car. It gets a new radiator and hoses tomorrow it turns out the radiator had a pin hole in it.
Nice carpentry on the gauge box. My old man is constantly trying to find a way to incorporate wood into a vehicle.
It won't look like wood once I'm finished, a little skim coat of body filler and you never bea able to tell what its made of. I found some spray paint yesterday that is very close to the color of the interior.
You forgot to include cup holders. ;)
Looks awesome, btw. I hope you'll post more pics after it's painted.
I was trying to think of a way to mount a cup holder but the space is kinda odd. I'll need to add those when I have a brilliant moment.
I got the new radiator in and since everythin is looking real good currently I ordered a new heater core, water pump, and gas tank. The engine oil pressure is 35 to 40psi at idle and 50psi when driving water temp is pretty solid around 190°f Volts are 14+ when driving no load. I think the engine is a winner so far.
Next on the list new exhaust system, new valve cover, upgrade ignition, and figure out the front end groan when turning..
Hey folks I am going to replace the radio with a more modern unit. I was looking at the 2 knob vintage upgrades, but then I noticed tthat a guy on ebay has a dash for a more modern din unit. Is it possible there is a dash that is the same color as our car.
I believe in '85 they moved to the single din style radios so if you can find one in your color out of an '85+ parts car you should be able to mount the newer style din radios in it.

that stiill would require some trimming to get a single newer din into that older din slot
Make a double cup holder out of a block of wood and a router that will just fit between those "legs" but leave enough room for the shifter to hit first. Seat movement?
If you can't find a matching one, you could paint it. The color codes for original trim are available.
The DIN radio pod is the way to do it.
The din style verses modernized 2 knob style is my conundrum. The din style is much easier to find swap out and cheaper but with all that now it makes it more appealing to a would be thief. The 2 knob however that I'm looking at retains the old look and does essentially the same job just slightly higher cost maintains nostalgia and deters a bad guy cause who wants a old stupid radio.
Yesterday I realized there is a console that looks suspiciously like what I'm building. I must have subliminally seen one and built off the design.
Anyway today I got the fuel tank out to replace it and while in the area I figure I might as well stop any rust that could grow into a hole. The car is fairly clean for being 30 yes old and coming from Jersey.

What do you plan on doing to the rust? Mine spent most of it's life in CO and was rust free until I brought it to TN. I guess the humid air is doing it's thing to the under carriage.
Convert what what I can sand blast the rest. Spot repair over the next couple months.
Just as a regular maintenance item I try to get under the car at least a couple of times a year with a brush, some rust converting primer, and some spray on undercoating. Spraying out dirt and salt with the washer at the car wash is always a good idea beforehand.
At the same time you grease the joints and adjust the carb for the season is a good time. Even new cars where there are few real grease points benefit from a little love.
Has anyone here got a good source for the headliner material for my color interior? Apparently I need to fix that very next according to the Boss.
It looks like you have honey interior. I bought some material a couple years ago from theses guys http://www.wlsheadliners.com/headliner-color-chart.html.
What a nice car! This rust is no problem, spray Owatrolon it every year and it will last forever!

Funny question, what transmission fluid does this thing use?
Dexron III aka D/MIII
That's what I was hoping. Thanks man.
Happy 4th
Well folks we are 111,000mi and it's running just fine. I took the new exhaust system the PO included with car and installed it without the cat and a quiet muffler now you have to wait for the noisy starter to stop before we can tell if the motor is running. lol
I did a oil change this morning finally I have a to go over the engine and look for leaks starting at the valve cover. While under the girl I found the ball joints are factory except for one the upper right side ball joint. Since the day we got the car there has been a creeky noise when turning or driving over bumps 2 shots of greaseI in the ball joint and no more noise. To bad none of the other joints in this thing have zero fittings. I found a CV boot that has ruptured I would plan on replacing it, but I think the owner of the car wants a solid axle swap and larger tires.

I just so happen to have a great 8 lug axle I just took out of my Bronco.

What? No TTB? lol
Funny I was thinking about TTB up front yesterday on my way down to take the canoe to the river. I would get rid of the need for a Trac bar using TTB but I think for simplicity of design the solid axle would be much better.
I almost got it hung up in some loose gravel next to the river trying to get a photo at the end of our canoe trip. I managed to kept the throttle steady and quickly I switched the selector to 4wd (no easy feat since you need to pull the little pin down before you can move the switch) and thankfully the repair I made the vacuum system allowed the 4x4 to engage and later disengage without the loss of drive.

oddly enough my wife pointed out we have a pelican on top of our/Her eagle.
Today I took it over to a place to get the headliner repaired. I put new lift cylinders on the hatch.
It's GREAT to see STOCK wheels on Eagles!!!
Were the wheels that are on this one a factory option then? This car is bare bones amenities wise, good if you want a simple car with fewer parts. I just questioned whether or not it would have had these wheels from the dealer.
Same wheels my wagon had. Would've cost me more to switch the 235/75/15s I have that are on TJ wheels than I could get for the old tires with near new tires (ended up getting $130 for them)
Those wheels are Sport model wheels. Which could be ordered on any Eagle.
More work on the proud old bird last week. I had a new headliner installed and Sunday I replaced the u joints in the rear drive shaft. I have officially reached the no squeaky Eagle level. :hello2:
Well today Harry received a remand starter from a local electric shop here in town and just since I was under the hood I checked the air fliter and was glad I did, it occurred to my PCV valve was not working and had loaded the air cleaner with oil. I
I'm ordering a new polished aluminum valve cover and all the parts to upgrade the ignition system. My wife and I are entering it in the 4 wheel Jamboree here in Indy. So I have some work to do to make old Harry a good llooking old car.
Make sure the starter drive gear is at LEAST as tall as a quarter (Canadian or US) If it is shorter, the rebuilder went cheap and used a Ford drive which WILL fail and take out the flexplate at the same time. $$$!!!
I will take a look next time I'm in that area by the way I'm crawling around under the thing once every week it shouldn't be to long.
I'm ordering the aluminum rocker arm cover for tomorrow. I was going to show the part number but I can't find it for some reason today once I get to work I will have it.
We have a report of 15mpg on the heals of finding the pcv valve stuck, a oil soaked air cleaner, and the interesting little door in the air cleaner housing that was not opening allowing unrestricted airflow into the engine. I also used some dryer vent hose to connect the air cleaner to the cold air pickup until or even if I can find the correct hose. So there hope for better and I still have ignition tuneup to do.
18mpg :hello2: we're getting better.
Aluminum valve cover. Check
ECM ignition bypass. Check
New shaft mount stereo. Check
Dad and I performed the ECM ignition bypass this morning and removed any and all computer related wiring. Everton wentsmooth up iuntil the wire harness from the ignition box to the distributor. My car was missing on wire in the 4 pin connector. I went to local parts yard and found a early 80' s ford trexacth the 351w and snagged the harness it uses since all the wires are mated exactly the way they need to be for this mod. The only thing I ended up doing was chopping off 2 extra wires and soldering the green to the negative terminal on the coil.
Pictures anyone

Kellie and I removed the shifter as an assembly and claimed the rear driveshaft also. I will be doing the swap sometime in the next few weeks trying to get the car capable for winter. I also have a tail shaft leak on the current T case so this swap will curtail that.
????? What method are folks using to shift the axle disconnect in and out with this set up? I an still new in the Jeep thing my Bronco has no such mechanism.
I have a little trip coming up in a few weeks that is a bucket list item. I acquired a spot on a charity UTV race team for the Baja 1000.

Posi-lok Cable or hook the dash switch to only the front axle.
Well the good news we are still mobile. The old bird developed a steering problem this week. After inspecting it a little further I realized the Idler arm was really bad. took it for a little ride afterwards and still had a little bind when turning right. I didn't see the left upper a arm mount deterioration.

the lower section of the frame rail was still intact pretty well so I used a piece of 12ga. steel that was 2"x5"x17 to form the bottom and inside portion of the frame rail and then coped it to fit up to the shock tower a arm mount.

Wow, that's pretty bad. That would send most Eagles to the junkyard. Glad to see you fixing it. As far as the front axle goes, you can just permanently lock the front axle with a hose clamp. You'll have to do a search for the mod.
10hrs to refit it and drove the old girl out of the driveway that night. :occasion14: I accidentally cut thru the fuel return line. :banghead: I patched that line and in turn by moving it knocked some rust loose further down and now that line leaks in a new spot. :banghead: :banghead: so now that line and vapor vent will get redone.
This is the other job I have been doing for our youngest daughter and primarily what I been focusing on for this week.

Everything is a mess right now but the chassis for her Full size Bronco is ready for it's power team.
Pulled the trigger today on switching out the 129 for a 242. I let the plug out and a large blob fell out then came red trans fluid and then this white looking stuff. I imagine it's the stuff out of the viscous coupling.

The snout on the 129 is longer by about 3/4" than the 242 I choose, so I was faced with a dilemma. I could try and seal up the trans and the case, I could wait for the correct case, or I could lop the end of the old case off and seal it to the shaft and make it semi close to the way it should be. I chose the 3rd.

I had an assistant run the drill and spin the input shaft while I used a cut off wheel to loop off about 5/8ths" of this piece and made my little spacer seal thing. The case is in and the drive shafts are connected so tomorrow I will be making the shift linkage work.

Why are you changing the 129 out? Did yours have shift on the fly?
The transfer case was toast even in 4wd mode it barely would move itself. I don't think our was shift on the fly in order to engage 4wd you are supposed to stop, pull the pin, flip the lever. I tried it, but I think the goo that makes it work came out.
I managed to get the Cherokee shift mechanism installed today and it all works well once I figure out the permanent solution to engaging the front axle and doing the finish work for the interior.

I don't know what the big debate was over the speedo cable not fitting without a 90deg. adapter for it. My speedo cable went right in no problem at all.

I reused the linkage from the zj with a minor length change in the lower linkage.

I would've loved to power wash everything, but my time was tight and I really need the old bird on the road for next week.

The speedo cable deal is with NP229 being right under that floor brace.
Harry the Eagle made it out of the driveway today. :blob1:
And I flexed him out a little

No leaks, Squeaks, Clanking, Thumps, or Vibration. I played around a little with it afterwards all the systems function normal I am using the 2wd/4wd mode selector to engage the front axle. I had to remove all the extra lines for the t case actuator except the geen line I shortened it and conected it to the top of the actuator. It engages and disengages smoothly.
The Eagle saga continues,
This week I found my self under the bird once more. Weeks ago when I had to make emergency repair to the left upper a arm mount I accidentally clipped the fuel return line with the sawsall. I thought I'd be reall slick and splice line with a piece of rubber 1/4" fuel line and we'd be good. ...... wrong. As luck would have it by moving the line the small amount I did I knocked the little piece of rust loose that was coving to hidden potential hole in the line further down. The return line on these cars is important with it blocked off the car will not start hot worth a darn. I imagine it relieves the pressure created in the fuel supply line and keeps from puddling fuel in the intake.
The fuel lines might as well get updated with the times. I called my local parker dealer and aquired some 1/4" and 5/ 16" black poly line and ran all the new line in plastic. We'll see what the long term affects are but I think it will work pretty well. The supply and return are routed next to each other now making it easier to protect them.

I would like to have gotten some picks of the poly line but dark had set in and I had to get going. I had planned on coating the underside of the car this fall but time has gotten away from me once more. I may try and get a garage space open and drive it in and do that job.

Last week was the first time since owning the eagle that it didn't want to run. Temperatures got down to below 0 and idling became a issue all of the sudden. I finally got well enough to go work on the car Thursday and I opened the idle jets up about another 1 1/4 turn and bumped up the idle stop screw.
I am having trouble with the alternator not throwing charge until the engine revs up briefly once and then it will charge great. The alternator is newly rebuilt, but before replacing it and since the charge indicator light has been on. The voltmeter I installed shows I am getting good charge after the engine speed increases just one time. I'm going to need to revisit the wiring up front after the computer removal perhaps I removed something in the act and did realize.it until just recently.
I did score a very nice hood center strip with a hood ornament that is nearly perfect condition.

Check the belt tension. The pullies could be glazed. With the cold temps the belt could have expanded a bit. The A/C equipped cars are a bit harder to get the belt tension right.
It was doing this right after I put the remanned alternator in and the same day I also installed all new belts. I think I have a little wiring issue. If it wasn't so foolishly cold working on it wouldn't be such a pain I have grown fairly fond of the bird. I understand what you mean about belt tension it makes me so glad all my other vehicles have automatically tensioning serpentine belt systems.
Found the problem. This 7.5amp fuse popped. I put a new one in the light went away and the voltmeter goes right to full output.

The belt was already getting loose so I have them a little tweak.
Now I'm off to get a fuel pump since I noticed this one just beginning to spit just a little mist of fuel.
