Spent a lot of time on the sx4 and have gotten a few things done
Car sat for over a decade
1. Fixed the brakes, new master, calipers, wheel cylinders, shoes, pads, springs, and several new lines
2. Took the fuel tank off, half full of nasty gas, couple of holes. Took it to radiator shop for repair
3. Got the wipers working, cowl was full of debris and wiper linkage was seized stuck
4. Scraped surface rust and treated some of the underside
5. Got 4 new used tires and put them on
6 removed door panels and greased widow gears, now they roll up and down smoothly
7. Removed large rats nest from glove box area
8. Rebuilt carb and put it back on
9 filled various fluids
10. Filled and bled clutch
So today it moved under its own power! Drove it around the field , new brakes work great and it runs reall good considering it probably hasn't had a tune up in this century. Note in pic below my redneck underhood gas tank!
Got some new shocks so hopefully put them on tomorrow, have all the bolts soaking in penetrating oil.
Los of rust issues to deal, with, frame rails look good, floor pans not so much.... Lots of surface rust in everything, sitting in a humid Tennessee field for 10 or 12 years does that. Here are some pics

Surprised after sitting in a field for ten or more years it looks that good. Great save and looks like your doing a great job on it. Good luck on the rest of the project. Sure it will be worth it.

Awesome to see another up and running! It's an SX4 renaissance.
Progress!
That's identical to my SX/4 when I got it.
Wow, thanks priya, that gives me a lot of confidence since your sx is so awesome!
Call me stupid, but why is the rotated 90 degrees?
I think you are missing a word in there, but I just had a look at the pics and I see what you meant to say. That carb is not mounted right...most be some weird adapter. Wondering how jerry-rigged that makes the acceleration linkages...
You can see that there is an Offenhauser intake manifold on the car, along with a ????? carb.
Yes, the carb is mounted sideways, and it is weird. I have never seen anything like it
it has an Offenhouser (Sp) intake that has a 4BRL opening with a 4 to 2 barrel adapter and then a holley 2BRL mounted sideways
the linkage is a cable system attached to the stock linkage and its not too good in my opinion, the pedal is very hard to mash and irregular
The really weird thing is it runs great!
I may just pull the whole mess off and put a stock intake on it, anybody want to buy a fancy 4BRL intake??? Summit racing sells them for like 300 bucks!
these eagles come with some strange parts.

Where do you connect the weird? lol.
you mean wire?
I suppose I should be productive too. For being parked for so long, it sure looks fine.

probably more likely. you gotta be amazing with cars if you can spot a missing wire!

Meant to say word. I edited my post! Thanks!
I knew what you meant Rafe
After all you are getting married soon so I would expect you to be a little distracted!
Some progress
Lots of rust, took out carpet to reveal floor of shop....
Rockers rusty too behind Krayton
So we been stripping it down and patching stuff, formed up so e new floor pans

Don't mind the ugly blue paint on the floor it's mearly there to cover bare metal, not gonna show someday!
Ps - when I removed the rocker cover it was completely full of dirt and a large colony of ants! That's where the worst rotten part is,.
They were very angry with my restoration efforts
DANG RUST!!!
Are you doing the floor proper or riveting?
I've always had pretty good luck riveting and then fiberglass sing everything , held up great for 15 years on my wagon so far
Also, luckly I have a completely rust free Spirit that has given a lot to keep the rest of the fleet on the road, looks like it's about to donate some rockers now! Those will be welded in place of course.
Luckily since my welding is pretty ugly at times the Krayton peices will cover everything up nicely
Cool cool. Do what works for you man!

Rocker panels are also available from Rock Auto for $32 each, if you'd prefer to work with something new.
A little more progess
1. Welded in the new floor panels and then fiberglassed them TOO just to be sure
2. Undercoated the whole floor area
3. Got new carpet, hope to install this weekend and put the seats back in, its really hard to drive it sitting on an old milk crate
4. Ordered brand new rocker panels from Rock Auto, they are on their way!!
BTW, the rocker panels were only $32 each, however the shipping was as much as the part! But still not bad for new ones I suppose
5. Got new Jeep door handles to put on
6. Started sanding, lots more of that to do
7. Almost got the rear bumper off, still one bolt that wont come off grrrr
Good progress so far! I wonder how bad the galvanic corrosion around the bumper will be?
Got the new rocker panels in the mail today, they are really nice. I've never bought a new body part for an AMC ever...
It held them up to the car and they look like a good fit at first glance
Tomorrow I hope to cut out the old stuff and get the new ones welded in, I will take lots of pics of the progress

I used those rocker panels when I had Pepe repainted. I didn't do that work myself so I can't tell you if they were easy to put in but the finished product looked good! Good luck getting them installed!
Progress! Still lots to do, my son will be grinding off old paint for hours and hours...

Re primer for 3rd time, wet sanded, and smooth as a babys bottom, we have the paint all in, going with white. All the crome is flat black. Wheels and bumpers flat black too powder coated. My son wanted to see how the wheels and tired would look, they don't rub but have about 1 millimeter clearance!

Waiting on my friends paint booth to be available, should be in a few days and then we can spray it and start re assembly
Still need to figure out some electrical bugs but it starts and runs excellent
Will keep you all posted, my son is so excited he cant stand it, truth be told I am too. We have wanted an SX for years, they are just so dang cool
Looking good. I need to get mine at that point too.
Nice work! She's gonna look good. Can't wait to see it.
P.S.
Y'all are fast workers, wish I was at least 1/2 that fast.
Great work guys!
Nice job!
Update!
My freinds paint booth finally had a little availability and I took the SX there today! Luckily I live in a small town and nobody gave me any static about driving it across town in its current condition.
Got it taped off today, spaying it tomorrow, I'm super excited. This is my first time to paint a car, luckily I'm getting some good advise and training from one of the best there is. He does $100,0000 custom rat rods that go all over the country, he even had one on a tv show recently. So far he hasn't been too critical of my body work.
Let's hope I can not have too many runs tomorrow! Wish me luck, I"ll take more pics . That's my dad helping me mask.

That's because your a celebrity there. ;D Good to see progress being made.
nice project & progress. Looking forward to seeing it painted! ;)
Spray day!
I'm gonna say again, I've never painted a car, so I'm learnig a lot kinda as I go. Went pretty good, used single stage urethane paint.
Sealer primer first then 4 coats of white. Got two runs and a little orange peel, but I'm pretty sure I can get most of it out. I do have a lot of experience fixing really bad paint jobs!
It's curently drying as I type this, tomorrow we will get it back to the shop and begin re assembly.

I was gonna go with pink but didn't.
All the trim, bumpers, wheels etc are powder coated flat black or coated in flat black. I think it will come out pretty cool, we'll see.
Plus there's a saying in body work I have learned, if it ain't right, paint it white!
And most of my body work sure ain't right....
Out of paint booth, now a lot of reassembly
Hope I can remember where I put all those peices and where they go?

I'm sure you know, but If you're going to do any wet sanding and buffing, now would be the best time before you start bolting the trim back on.
We have the sx4 now mostly put back together, this morning parked it by the spirit for comparison. It's a LOT taller!

Looks awesome!
Wow, what a difference of what it looked like when you got it.
With all the painting experience, and now that it's white...it's time for the AMC logo on the power bulge of the hood!
OMFG That would look so awesome.

I don't know why I had not looked at this thread yet, but I am impressed! Nice job. I like the color choice. The black pieces sure look great against the white.....Rich
I have to give my son credit for the color choice, he wanted the white with everything else blacked out, the wheels and bumpers were powder coated . The flares have that line x coating, so they are kinda bumpy feeling and look really cool. Everything else he painted satin black. It's really came out nice, very tough looking
The early bumper caps on an SX4 is the way to go. Finding decent ones to paint and make look nice is hard. Also, not having the chrome trim on the bumpers and sides of the car make it look better too. I was planning to go with satin black on the trim on my sedan project, and seeing your car, I think I am going to really like it!
The end caps came off a Spirit, Concord ones will work too, still not easy to find but it widens the search a little bit.

All that work for plain old white? :rotfl: Just kidding, can't wait to see the finished product.

I decided I'm going to paint my Corvette this colour.
Ok, we wet sanded and buffed it out . Today it got its first good coat of wax. My son has been driving it every day, he really loves it. Runs really good, I think in finally got the timing and carb dialed in.
I've been out of town a lot for work and he has been doing a lot of work, it's been and awesome father son project.
It's funny how much better the sx4 rides and drives than the spirit, for being the same car the SX is much better, maybe it's the extra weight, not sure?
We still have to get the radio installed and working, and of course some little stuff, but it's mostly complete and has sure come a long way for a car that sat in the woods for a decade.

PS - special thanks to Mom who purchased the Sx4 decals!
It sure looks great! I wonder how it would look with black on the lower portion from the lines on the fenders and quarter panels down. Also shouldn't the door bottoms also be black from the fender flare notch at the front of the door back to the rear fender flare? I'm just jealous you have a working running Eagle that you can drive daily! :blob1:
Yes Rafe, it was originally dark blue around the bottom
However we decided not to go back with that look and went this direction and didn't do the black band around the bottom.
We also didn't put the rubber peice around either. I think it looks cleaner, however we just have to be real careful of door dings in parking lots
I was always told you have to wait 30-90 days to wax a new paint job depending on manufacturer. Was the paint heat cured?
Looks really good! 8)
I'd also wait off waxing for at least 1-2 months.
Looks great!
Just for the fun of it I fabbed up my idea. The front fender flare extending out bothers me so I put the black back on the doors and then also the bumper areas.

And how it sits now for comparison.

Thank you Rafe, it was bothering me too. They never quite look finished without the spoiler too. It will look extremely sharp and there is alot of good work done already.
Looks like your son is selling it on eBay huh? Bummer!

Yeah, that's the same car!
I just saw this post. I like the look of the white SX/4., especially with the black trim.
