My "new to me" sx4 has been sitting in a field for a decade
With a half tank of rotten gas, which may be the worst smelling thing ever....
Took the tank off, there is a radiator shop here that can clean it out and repair it (has a bad seam) hopefully, I had them do the one on our spirit a few years back, they lined it with something
The sender unit is covered in crud, looks like coral growing on it! I don't know if it can be saved, the float is rotted in half and the sock is a solid mass of varnish....
Anybody got or know of a sender unit for sx4 or spirit? I checked the amc venders and they don't even listt them anymore
Has anyone tried a universal one?
Thanks, hate dealing with nasty gas
I have a universal fuel sending unit in my sx4 tank. Took some modification to get it to work, but it was definitely the cheaper option. I didn't get the float height set quite right, so full closer to 3/4 tank on the gauge than it is to full.
I believe this is the sender I used:

Attached is a picture of my modifed assembly.
Yuch, that old gas is the WORST! I can still smell it, 5 years after getting my car lol.
I bought a new sending unit for my Kammback (same as SX/4) back then from one of the vendors, can't remember which one offhand. I'll try to dig through my records and find it.
ugh, bad gas. I think I still have one or two gas cans full of it from emptying the tank. Not exactly sure what to do with it!
I had a friend in my area who had a bunch of nasty gas, he called around at the waste places and the fire department an they both told him to leave it outside in an open container and let it evaporate.
I checked back through my old emails, and I bought mine from American Parts Depot. However when I looked at their website tonight, I see that they list it as "Out of stock" :'(
Yep, I could certainly use a sender unit for my old tank too. Oh well. The guys at the shop did something to mine to make it work.
Yes, it a terrible smell, took me two days to get it out of my nose!
Thanks for the pic too, that is very helpful, I looked up in the TSM and got the Ohms values, I think I can clean up and save the pick up and attach a new sender to it like you did
Talked to the radiator dude today, he said he has saved ones that were much worse!
FloMex may have one for you. They sell parts for VAM cars but might send to the US.
There is an outfit you can find online that will totally rehab your sending unit. When I looked at it back in 2008, it was about the same cost as a new one, so I went new. The major problem with mine was that the winding was broken, and the local radiator shop couldn't repair it.
