I got a 85 Eagle with 258 & factory carb. I just got it tuned up new vacuum lines etc.. & the carb is way out on it you have to let it warm up an give it gas to go an when you put it in gear it kills. You can hear this thing idle fast. How should I adjust the carb on this since it is starting to hit cold weather an this car will be used for a daily driver? What can I do to help it start an run better this winter? I am use to fuel injection vehicles have not had one with carb in about 20 years so trying to get back use to this type of vehicle again.
Well, there is a whole procedure for adjusting the timing and carb; the IS-12e service letter. I can email you a .pdf copy if needed. But first you should check for the usual clogged idle bleed tubes (look down the carb while its running, and see if you see any raw gas drippping from the venturis). Also make sure the choke linkage is adjusted correctly, and the choke pull-off is working.
Would love it

Just got my 82 Limited back from the tech and now the choke doesn't cut in and car has lost a lot of power.
Would love to give it a go.
thanks

PM sent with the file. I think I'd be hunting up a new tech!!
ok yea send it to my email
[email protected] & I tried to drive it a couple places an I let it warm up like I was told an put it in gear an gave it gas an it was fine as soon as I took my foot off the gas to stop it killed. I am going to check the carb an see if I can find anything wrong there. The car sat 8 years not being started somebody said it might be float on the carb sticking to.
Make sure you have no vacuum leaks. The gaskets between the carb and manifold are known for rotting out. Spray a little carb cleaner or starting fluid around the base of the carb while running and see if the idle changes. Also, as AMC of Houston said, check for plugged idle tubes by checking for dribbling gas down the carb throat while idling. The gas should be a fine spray.
the car has all new vacuum lines an fuel lines on it.
They may not be hooked up correctly though (since you're not the original owner and none of us are infallible) Where are you at?
I am in Charleston WV & had a guy adjust the carb on it an so far so good now I just need to replace the thermostat in it an it should be good to go minus fix the broke door handle an mirror on it.
