Title: My 81 Kammback
Post by: SpreadEagle on November 17, 2012, 10:19:24 PM
This morning I adjusted the carburetor, 1 and a half turns on the barrels. It idled at this time and starts easy. Drove a few places. Got home and vacuumed out junk and glass in floor. Found more rust areas that ill need to addressed. Started on a removable light bar that fits on the roof rack. Think I'll buy some Rustoleum paint and spray some of my rust holes I'm finding. Better than nothing right? Need to get the passenger door glass replaced. After that the windshield needs to be resealed. Hope to find window trim for it before that so I  can call that part done.
Again will try and get pictures along the way.

Today I drove the car to church and back home. Then took it to work. I had a co worker ask calling my name and came over and confirm I owned the can and wants to take a ride. He's in the local AMC club and owns an older Cherokee.. Love my Eagle more every day. Just the attention is great. and I seem to be getting good mileage out of it. So fix window and  patch the holes in body until I can afford to fix the metal correctly.

Sure is.  Helps keep things from getting worse until you've got the time to do a full repair.  I'm always surprised when people buy a car to restore and then can't be bothered to put a little rust paint on it until they get around to the restoration.

Well I'm at work now and temporarily detained.. Took the car for a spin on break and it died.. I'm blaming electrical either Battery or alternator.. Most likely battery, when I adjusted the Carburetor I had it on the charger and it gave an error saying bad battery but later charged without issue. Glad I have access to cables and roadside assistance.

Well ran into more of same issue. But seems less electrical starter fluid gets it to fire but wouldn't stay running.  Since the carburetor was adjusted before at about 1.5 turns out I pulled the fuel filter and a crank showed fuel pump working.  Connect the line and not running.  Waiting maybe 20 minutes and it starts and runs long enough to get it home.  Bought a new fuel filter and addative. Adjusted ports to 2 turns out and it started an ran. I didn't take it anywhere because l didn't have time to be detained. But again seems to run.

I've got a shell headed my way shortly. It's an SX4 and I hope that I can trade metal enough to save the Kammy.
I guess first question is does anyone know a welder up this way? From other forums and such? I have a couple options I'm looking at locally but for me options are good.

Some what excited about this.. Hope I don't mess anything up on her.

As it gets started I will post pictures of the changes..

So Kammy got moved out of garage. I've got brake issues I'm going to have to address, first press of the brake is really spongy. The SX4 will be here May 15th, Will start stripping it shortly after. Picture will happen as I can..

Got the shell yesterday. SX4 with really good metal. A shame I'm going to cut it to pieces.. But metal from the doors forward is what I want to move to the Kammback. It also has a really nice black dash and A/C accessory tray.

Kammy is bad but the SX4 has no title and the interior has been turned to rat bedding. Some where I have a photobucket link with photo's.  I'm at work posting this at the time.. I do have a rear black piece of trim with speaker grills that I don't need. Wish it would fit..

Kammy is on life support. On jack stands and had a partial done on driver side rocker. I have a 95 XJ sitting here also waiting to be stripped.
Currently looks like a swap of the 4.0, the AW4, rear axle and gas tank are planned My SX/4 parts car is getting stripped further down. Gas tank is out and the rear bumper is off.  Bumper is available for sale..
This post is just a fast update to what I'm dealing with. will post picks shortly..

As the plan is to swap the 95 XJ drive into Kammy Just a couple things to make sure I have strait. AW4 shifter positioning... Is it the same as an AX-15? What about shifter handles can I use the XJ's?

Things that have to come across from conversion.

Transmission cooler
NP231
4.0
Computer
intake
Modified
Power steering
A/C
Rear axle
Transmission mount

The AW4 has a cable to the shifter. You can put it anywhere you want.

You do not have to do a fuel injection swap at the same time. You could keep an AW4 happy behind a 4.2L setup or a 4.0 motor with a 4.2L setup bolted on it. The computer can be wired directly or you can use the fancy manual shifter that is available but pricey.

You can also fuel inject using the 4.0 intake but keep your 4.2L accessories. In other words you stick the AW4 flexplate on a 4.2L, stick the 4.0 Intake on the 4.2L, keep all other Vbelts, power steering, and accessories stock 4.2L. You can use the automatic cooler built into the radiator but I would suggest an aftermarket external cooler, which most guys run anyway with the stock Eagle transmission.

A MPI fuel injected 4.2L is very conservative because of the old gas sipping camshaft. You won't get high output power but you will get better fuel efficiency. My CJ8 was set up that way. It needed a special Vbelt harmonic balancer from Hesco for $350 for a Crank Position Sensor, but you won't need that because your AW4 provides the CPS.

The 4.0 intake will work with the cast iron Eagle exhaust manifold on a 4.2L or 4.0L head. The later cast iron exhaust manifolds have a built in Oxygen sensor hole that works great for fuel injection 02 sensors (just pull off the stock 2 wire sensor and put on a 4 wire version). You can also use a 4.0 header with a 4.2L intake on a 4.0L head by denting the exhaust to make room for the big intake heater. The only combination that doesn't work is a 4.2L intake with 4.0L header on a 4.2L head.

Pulled lots of things off the parts car today.

The dash truly was simple. All screws across the top and 1 bolt on each side and remove all wiring and cables from the back

One of these fenders is getting sent to Pat.

I suggest you save the door hinges, windshield (if not cracked), windshield trim, and of course the bumper caps and side markers (even just the bases, as new/reproduction lenses are available).  I say this because I failed to do so on some items!  I inadvertently failed to remove the brake pedal that I need for another car before taking it to the scrapper! If you are going down to bare metal you'll want to put some rust proof primer or something down pretty soon after. If you leave that exposed metal showing for long without putting a coating over it it will start to oxidize just from the moisture in the air.

It doesn't look too bad. It was your rocker panels that needed the most work right?

It would appear so at this point.  When I tale the floor out I'm going to clean the frame rails out and spray them again.
Passenger side has a large hole in the rear wheel well around the spring perch. Not sure what it's going to need there..

Will take more pictures as I get into those parts..

More work done on Kammy.  This is a patch job using a SX4 for what parts the welder can.

You can see here the nice metal the welder used to patch the inner rocker.

At this point Kammy had a driver floor and inner rocker. Hump under seat looked good. No fixes there are being considered.
This coming Saturday the plan is to do the rear seat area and around the spring perch. Working on dissecting the parts car for rocker parts and outer fender skin.. Not too happy with how that is going.  Thinking about cutting the car in 1/2 and flipping the rear on it's top or side..

Finished removing the driver side rocker. Got a minor issue. The front seatbelts are different between the SX and Kammy. Looking to change to a black interior sort of needs black belts..

Had another round of welding yesterday.

Discovered more about the car.
Color
Was a Light Tan with a metallic garnet lower stripe.
Found this out because the rocker that was so rotted was a skin over the top of original rocker..
Now for a a before and after montage..

Before repair with all sections removed
