Title: New Eagle Owner
Post by: fritzsch on October 14, 2012, 06:57:28 PM
Hey,

Just bought an 1987 Eagle couple weeks ago. I was a bit reckless and feeling rash so I bought it sight unseen, the owner seemed straight up, but I guess we have different definitions of "very little rust." Several other problems with the car, which I will probably be posting about here. Very cool cars, just wish I had picked a better example, lesson learned. Would post pictures but I dont own a camera  :-\.

Well I think were all guilty of that at one time or another. Anyway good luck with your eagle.

Yeah; I think "rust" amounts should be legally defined somewhere to give folks recourse on a not-as-advertised deals.   I've noticed the term "very little rust" can mean anything from "very little rust" to "no holes bigger than your fist" depending on the seller.   Oh well; welcome to the fold anyway!!

Located in central Illinois, so middle of the Rust Belt and salted roads. I overpaid by a lot  :banghead: I am actually hoping on getting it in decent condition to sell because I am going out of country for 6/7 months in January.

Rust is relative. If you own the car a little is a lot, but the day a for sale sign goes in the window all of a sudden all that rust becomes very minimal....almost non existent....funny how that works...welcome to the nest! You will find all the rescources you need here.

Even worse is thinking the car has little rust then you rip into it and it is a mess... ie project 'lil eagle.  As I have posted before I am all about saving eagles if possible... I keep telling myself its all worth it.

So I was able to get some pictures PO sent. The body looks good except for a small dented up section and that is where the no rust claim originates I guess. Look underneath the car and its a whole different story.

Yup, one and the same car. I talked to the guy quite a bit too. Except for a headliner that is falling down or small holes in a few places, interior is pretty nice.

Just looking at your pictures and it looks pretty decent. Would love to see some underneath photos although. Is it just surface type rust or is there some serious rot issues going on?

Based strictly on those pictures, I would have assumed that the car was in excellent condition.

Unfortunately you can't assume anything with these cars.  I won't buy one long distance and/or sight unseen again unless I have an experienced and unbiased set of eyes to look the car over for me wherever it may be.
