how do you tell if a np242 is 21 spline or 23 spline without removing it from the vehicle? im doing the swap out with my 129 to this one
It will take some reading:

I've been reading a lot on this same subject and one of the statements I ran across said that easiest way to tell is by the transmission the 242 was attached to. If it was attached to a 4/5 speed manual it was a 21 spline and if it was attached to an automatic its a 23 spline. Still looking myself for more clarification on that.

08/90 and newer are all 23 spline behind the 4.0L and some with AX-15 (started in '89 in XJ/MJ) The V6 and 4 cyls were all 21 spline EXCEPT 3 speed auto (essentially the same trans as in Eagles, but different bell pattern)
The 242 was unusual behind a std trans.
ok. so anything after 90 its a good chance its a 23 spline? sounds good. i dont have a yard that has anything to old around here thats worth getting parts off of.
I am curious as well, as I am planning a TC/trans swap on one of my Eagles. I have a Dana 300 in my SX4, and it bolts directly on the stock 998 trans. I am planning to use the Dana 300 behind an AX15, and use the 242 I have (was behind the AX15) behind the 998 (engine, trans,242 going in another Eagle). I am hoping everything is the same (23 spline?).

Not looking to hijack, but are you running a flipped d300? Being a newbie to the Eagle, I thought it uses a drivers side front diff, and the d300 is a passenger side drop. Just curious.

I am running Dana 44's (passenger side drop).
You will need the 1" spacer ring between the trans and tcase. AFAIK all AX-15s are 23 spline (even early ones that were BA 10/5 dealer replacements) All AX-4 or AX-5 are 21 spline (only 4 cyl and 2.8 V6 rigs)
