Title: Hei and the old ICM
Post by: 85AmCfreak on July 17, 2012, 02:46:36 PM
So I was under the hood the other day and was thinking. I have a GM hei setup in the 83, why do I still have the old motercraft ICM? It was done by the P/o so the wiring is pretty choppy. Can I just unplug and unbolt it? It is very cluttered down there and I would like to tidy up the wiring.

Do you have a Motorcraft carb also? I have an MSD ignition and removed all the wiring to the ICM and stepper carb a couple days ago. Except for the one relay on the right fender well, everything unplugged. I had to cut the wires coming out of that relay.

The HEI should be wired right from the starter solenoid so no need for the ICM.  Make sure you wire in a 12V ceramic resistor for protection.

I am running a weber no feed back on this one. Whats the resistor for?

Protects from voltage spikes to the HEI.  HEI's burn up from unregulated power.  Require a full 12V but don't line anything more than that.
