Title: belt like squeal
Post by: ammachine390 on July 11, 2012, 05:36:40 PM
I had a post going about this about 2 years ago I think, but I think its been deleted, and the problem kind of just went away. But now it's back. The engine is making a noise that sounds exactly like a squealing belt. But I know for sure it's not the belts, as I took them off, and ran the engine (just for a few seconds) and it still makes the noise. Any ideas?

Water pump or a bearing in the alt or ac pump?
You may be able to use a stethoscope to locate the sound, but be careful of moving parts.
You can also use a long screwdriver the same way, but still with caution, obviously.

I've had a dry front crank seal squeal like a banshee before.   Spray some WD40 behind the balancer and see if it affects anything.

Jim sorry for kicking you where it hurts, but he took the belts off
he said. i wonder  about the amount of oil in the pan or the conditoion of the pump. i had an oil poump let go and stop pumping aftwr 200k. pressure went to zero. it made weird noises.

Interesting, that could very well be it, as it sounds like its coming from the crank pulley. Did that solve the issue for you, or was that just to see if that was the problem, with some other more intensive fix?

I just did an oil change on it today, still made the squeal after. I don't think my oil pressure is that low. At least I hope it's not. I do not have a gauge, but the light does not ever come on. The engine only has 122,000 miles on it.

Just another thought, would a bad harmonic balancer cause this kind of noise?

I had a washer drop behind the water pump pulley and get stuck. The squeal would come and go as it wedged in or came loose, and of course you can't really see behind the thing.

I was spraying everything with white lithium for a month until I decided that the pump bearing was bad and went to change the water pump. Imagine my surprise when that fell out.

Spraying WD behind the balancer fixed my issue for a while (until the WD dried up).   Eventually I replaced the front seal.

Spray PB'Laster behind there. It could be a swollen balancer rubber about to come apart (it'll look like it's squishing out)
