Title: the golden eagle has landed
Post by: GoldenEagle258 on June 22, 2012, 02:19:56 PM
I want to introduce myself as a proud first time eagle owner. i bought this 81 eagle 4x4 last week with 95k original miles, it has the 258 i6 in it and runs like a champ. i stumbled upon this gem and bought it from a nice old lady who was the original owner. it was garaged its entire life and hasnt seen more than 300 miles the past 5 years.

ive got some plans for the "golden eagle" but right now its 100% stock. its got a few gremlins that need to be fixed (stereo, gas gauge, headlight alignment) and im planning on doing some exhaust work maybe a new carburetor, put a bull bar and aux lights on the front and maybe a small raise and some meatier wheel/tire combo down the road.

any intro links, part retailers or any general newbie info would be appreciated.

here are a few pics i snapped with my phone, excuse the quality.

Out of the dozen or more Eagles I have owned, two of them were the same color as yours!

I am always amazed how pristine Eagles are still being discovered -- especially with relatively few made.  Welcome to the Nest!

Thats a beauty you got there, congratulations! as for the headlights, every eagle I have owned, i think ive had almost 9, had the "cross eyed" thing going on. If your lucky its a broken retaining clip (still available) on the adjuster screw...worst case scenario its a cracked headlight bucket...You can find em from time to time in junkyards and on various auction sights but they are a bit harder to come by. If all else fails some fiberglass rosin and cheese cloth can be used to reconstruct the bucket...it doesnt look pretty but once the headlights back in no one can tell....best of luck!

thanks everyone for the warm welcome.
i assume in order to align the headlights i have to use the screws above and to the side of the headlight assembly? i took a look at them yesterday but didnt have time to tinker with them. ill probably get around to it tonight...does anyone know which screws adjust which direction? ie. side screw adjusts horizontal movement top screws vertical movement?

If you remove the chrome trim, you will see that the adjuster mounts (plastic pieces) are probably broken.  As others have said, they are available from the 'nest store or on the unmentionable auction site.  There is no way to adjust the lights if parts are broken.

When my bucket broke, the adjuster would just go right through the bucket. So I drilled a hole into a strong hardwood, and was bigger than the hole in the bucket. Then I screwed the adjuster screw into the the wood. It's been working good now for a few years. It's not the most traditional fix, but you can't even tell from looking at the headlights. But it saved me from having to buy a new bucket.

Im trying to remember off hand....i believe,

Top screw- turn right to adjust up left to adjust down.
Bottom screw-turn right to adjust out and left to adjust inward.

Nice Eagle  ;D  I know you asked about venders, help, etc. I can tell you as a fairly recent owner of one (I've had Dirt McGirt since November) that The Nest is THE single best place for help there is. Especially when a mechanic looks at you funny when you tell them what you have (So....that's...like...a Jeep, right????)

Also, with your headlights....CAREFULLY, take off the necessary trim to see what is going on back there. I always thought mine were just out of alignment before realizing the whole fascia is cracked and such. Old plastic. Ugh.

But again, this is the best place for help, especially when something goes wrong that puts you into a fizzy (I didn't even know that COULD go wrong on a car....).  Usually my posts are answered in under an hour. There are great people here.

Welcome to The Nest!!   :occasion14:

Great looking Eagle. It takes a little pacience to own one of these cars but it's worth it many times over. Good Luck!

If its just the adjuster that's broken, you can pick them up at local auto parts stores, they are the pink/salmon colored ones, I think they will be labeled for GM's.  Nice looking car!!
