Title: Concord bumper?
Post by: kyklops on May 20, 2012, 11:33:22 PM
Anyone had any luck using a Concord bumper on their Eagle? I have a '81 4 door sedan, which seems to be the same body as a late 70s, early 80's concord. I have no bumper end caps left and, frankly, I never really liked them.  I'd prefer an all metal bumper.

I had the chance to do this a few months ago when I picked the life out of a Concord sitting in the Lakewood picking yard. It looks like it would bolt right up but I would have to do some measuring. I have a spare undrilled front Eagle bumper but I'm trying to replace the design with bumpers from other AMCs now. The Eagle bumper just isn't good enough anymore. If I ever see a Concord or Spirit on my 1400+mi journey this weekend I'll let you know how it goes. :)

They should be a bolt on.....They are listed in the parts catalog as the same part numbers for 1980.

The only problem is the holes in the fenders that will be left behind.

Thanks DaemonForce-- I'd me much obliged.

I like the ones like these:

That's a 1978 Concord. The 1980 Eagles and Concords both had the same bumper, but by then they had gone to the rubber end caps divorced from the fender. In 1981 is when Eagles started with the intergrated end caps, but Concords kept the rubber end caps. The all metal bumper will be hard to find. The rubber end caps type is pretty easy to find, since there are alot of rotted Spirits and '80 Eagles floating around ready to be parted. I think they would look especially nice painted black to match the end caps or with the end caps painted to match the fender.

On my Spirit I hated the divorced bumper. It looks terrible and alot of Spirit owners remove their bumper altogether. I fixed it by taking the rubber bumpers off, precisely cutting an inch or so off both ends, and then putting the rubber bumpers back. I also used Eagle bumper mounts, which bring the bumper at least an inch closer to the body. It makes a huge impact visually, and is commonly called a "bumper tuck."

My problem is that there is a lot of chrome on my eagle. So if I go with a painted bumper, I gotta do it to the rest of the chrome. Else it'll look weird.  I have thought about before, though.
I like the idea of the solid bumper-- it'll be like a tank.

There was a guy selling an SX/4 in MO and I went to check it out. It was an 83 and looked like it had bumpers from an 80 Eagle...he said they were off of an older Cherokee and that they bolted right up...so that might be another option you might want to try out.
