Title: 80 (?) Spirit AMX
Post by: vangremlin on April 28, 2012, 07:59:34 PM
Found a 1980(?) Spirt AMX in the Pull N Save junkyard in Aurora CO today.  The junk yard had even put an ad on C-List that they had it, but the ad only lasted a day or two.  Car has been pretty well stripped, no engine or tranny, no seats, it had rear louvers at one time but they were gone.  I grabbed the rear spoiler (center section only, the side pieces were already gone) which I'll be posting for sale here, the instrument cluster and dash section, and the glove box door.

What's sad is that I never saw this car posted on C-List by the previous owner.  It could have been saved from the crusher if they would have posted something before sending it to the junk yard.

I see door handles and turbine wheel. How much of the interior was left?

No grille....I was hoping it would be there.

Door handles were there, and 2 turbine wheels.  Not much of the interior at all is left.  Seats are gone.  There is a black sport steering wheel that I would have grabbed if I had a steering wheel puller...Are you looking for anything in particular?

I would be interested in the two rims and the spoiler piece. I already sent a message about the spoiler but I didn't know about the two rims when I sent it. Thanks for saving what you can, Van!

I just like to see that you are taking the time to save a few good pieces. If I can suggest anything, I would suggest taking all the plastic pieces out that you can from the interior and the headliner board. Maybe even the gas tank if it hasn't been punctured. All good parts to someone who might need them in the future.

But we can't save it all! Good job documenting this car though!

I see a black line that might be a sunroof. That would be worth saving.

Does the hood have the AMX fire logo? If it could be clearcoated and rescued that would make the hood worth saving.

Are you sure the front crossmember is a 6 cylinder crossmember? Even if it started life with a 258, as an '80 would have, its common to see a V8 swap. The V8 crossmembers are worth the time it takes to remove them.

Does the dash have the silver inlays? A full set of silver AMX inlays is worth saving.

The door panels and accessories in nice shape are worth grabbing. The AMX door panels are different than an Eagle or Spirit GT.

Looks like it may only have a couple turbine wheels.

I think he said it has two turbine wheels to be exact. I was planning on using a Dana 60 in the rear with 6 lug Grand Wagoneer rims. They are similar enough that I would use the two AMX rims in the front and I wouldn't mind the subtle differences.

I bought an AMX dash with the aluminum colour inlays from Kenosha.  If I remember correctly it cost me $125 for the dash and $200 - $250 to get it shipped.  That turned out to be a bad idea.  When I got it the aluminum inlays had the sort of minor scratches one would expect for a 30+ year old part so I decided to remove them and repaint them the aluminum colour.  I had to paint a couple pieces 3 times to get an even finish without hairs/dirt in them but eventually they came out pretty well.  After that I noticed the aluminum AMX inlays are identical to the woodgrain inlays commonly found in Eagles.  I could have bought those pieces locally and painted them for a fraction of what the AMX dash cost to buy and ship.  It's tricky to remove the inlays and reattach them but a careful and patient person can do it, worth considering seeing as the inlays in an AMX dash are likely going to have scratches in them.

It did have a sunroof but all that's left now is a hole in the roof.  No logo on the hood, just a plain power bulge.  It was originally a 6 cyl, if I make it back over there before its crushed I'll look at the crossmember but I'm not sure I would know the difference.  No silver inlays on the dash.  The door panels were there, but they cut some pretty big holes in them for the door speakers.

I'll look at the plastic pieces and headliner board.  I didn't think to look up while I was in the car!  I do know that the side panels in the back were already gone.

I'd love to have the hurricane wheels like in the pass/rear of the pic.  Those are my favorite wheels of all time.  Just restores a 6 lug set for my K-5 and have a 14" set on the way for one of the wagons.  Looking for a 15" set if anyone has them available.

Even the Magnum wheels from the front would be worth saving.  Also, check under it to see if there's a rear sway bar.  If so, that's worth grabbing along with the matching upsized front bar.  I've been looking for a set for my Concord.  Are the rear round marker lights still there?

Thanks for the tips El Matador.  There is one marker light left, its in bad shape.

I believe I would grab those rear wheels even if only two. Seems it might be easier to find two more instead of four. Wouldn't mind owning those myself if there available.

I went back to that yard a couple of weeks ago and the car was gone.  They don't stay long in the local junkyards.
