Awhile back I posted my floorboards and the rust I am dealing with. Got everyone's opinions on which repair route would be best (welding vs bolting, etc). Rollguy brought up using rivets instead of screws, and this seems like the route I am going to take.
My question is
What gauge of metal and what kind of metal is best for my floorboard application?
I have 24 gauge on hand but it seems like it will be a little flimsy.
Will be grinding to bare metal, cutting out the bad, using bondo-hair in holes, penetrol metal, CA the new metal in then rivet, paint then eventually new carpet.
Was wanting to weld, even found a few people that claim to do mobile welding. Called them to get an estimate, they said they'd get back to me but never heard from them again :-\
18-20 is what I normally use when I have to do floor work. 20 if it's a small spot, 18 if it's the whole floor (20 would do, but I don't have the equippment to put the ridges in the floor for extra strength, so 18 helps in that case).
I don't know, what's the gauge of an average street sign? ;D
:rotfl: hahaha, That is a good point though they do work well for floor pans....There's one in the cherokee, lol.
Good luck with it! If you want to put a bead on it (the ridges) you can do it with a hammer and a wedge of steel, but it's not that easy and it is time consuming. A body shop would probably have a bead roller and could whip it out pretty quick if you made friends with an offer of lunch or beer or maybe just out of the niceness of their hearts.
I used 16.
