Title: Clutch chatter?
Post by: shanebo on December 31, 2011, 09:47:30 PM
Hey guys, when I accelerate from a dead stop the car shutters as I let out the clutch..especially if i give it alot of gas. If i lightly let out the clutch and dont give it much fuel until the clutch is engaged it doesnt really do it. Would this be clutch chatter due to a glazed or oily clutch plate or is it somthing else? anyone ever experience this

It could be something contaminating the clutch disk surface.  I have also seen a worn out pressure plate or a broken clutch disk dampening spring.

If the clutch is old, the brass rivets are probably starting to show through and they grab, causing shudder on takeoff till the heads let go and then the car doesn't.

Does the valve cover leak in the back?  (or more ominous, the rear main).  Could be oil contamination.

It's still got the got the stock valve cover so she does leak down the back. I hope its not a rear main but it wouldnt be the first time I had to deal with one of those. It doesn't have much oil under the car only around the valve covers. I drove it several times today and some times it did it other times it was just fine. These transmissions are pretty small I may break it apart one of these days and take a look.
