Title: Easing the pain...My new 30 year old SX4 Sport.
Post by: shanebo on December 18, 2011, 01:25:42 AM
Well guys as alot of you know Im relocating to the "big city" and my 2 project eagles were given up to a new home. Im having to down size alot. I was not happy about having to get rid of half my rides including my trusty chevy truck. My wife insisted I get rid of it cuz of its size and gas mileage.. but this story has a silver lining....or should I say Silver with black and red lining  8) ...Vangremlin tipped me off to this SX4 a while back for sale in Loveland. I told myself if my truck sells before the Eagle does im going to buy it...cuz after all its technically downsizing  ;D Long story short the truck sold and Im picking it up this week...Its about 150 miles/2.5 hrs away so Ill get to know her pretty good by the time I get home...My buddies following me with a tow rope though just in case but by what Ive been told its a daily driver with about 90,000 miles so she should be fine...I plan on doing a photo log of her maiden voyage home. Thanks guys! Im pretty jazzed about it...Its a manual 4 speed and I think its 4.2L I havent even seen it yet....bought it sight unseen...I guess I was too excited about getting the thing...It did just pass emissions so it must run ok...as long as it runs good ill be happy no matter which engine it has.

Hey amcman is that the car im buying in that picture? Ad is yours the one that was for sale up in denver a while back?

Maddog, Im moving to either colorado springs or fountain....I was wanting to move to Pueblo because most of my accounts are in pueblo, canon city, and all those out laying towns like lamar, rocky ford and  la Junta...My wife refused to move to pueblo though...she said its too hot in the summer.

You are killing me! I have never even seen an SX4 in Florida. I just refuse to buy with only picters as neither of mine were what they looked like on film. Maybe I will get lucky at Mecum's in Kissimmee Fl at the end of Jan. If not I am going to try for a 1970 Chevelle.

Maybe after the new years we can get together Gronk. Ive got alot of stuff going on too. Maybe we could do it when you come to pick up your cars...If we got time that is, if not I could run it down to ya after I get it registered....I cant wait to see what kind of difference you  upgrade makes.

It looks like my truck sold just in time too...I talked to the owner today to set up a time this week to get it and he said he got 4 or 5 calls on it since last week but luckily I was the first one to come up with cash....Thursday is the day I get to pick it up....I may even get to test out the 4x4 by the looks of the forecast.

Is it still driveable? Atleast theres a bunch of them around in junkyards and what not, you guys can rebuild it for fairly cheap...not like on one of these cars where you can find parts once in a blue moon....and if ya do they want an arm and a leg for them.

I havnt gotten a good look at the underside as its been snowing like crazy i did take a picture of the underside and it looks to be ok i dont know whats under the side skirts but judging from the picture it should be ok...the interior is real good minus alot of dust and the remnants of an old sticker on the dash...all in all I think 2500 was a fair price. In the picture the car was running so it shows correctly at idle...however it never goes over 2000 rpm...it bounces around a little a does wierd little things but I still say its more entertaining to look at than the digital clock. By the way, what the heck is that compressor lookin thing on top of the engine...is that a smog pump?????

If you just happen to "lose" those parts, make sure you know where to "find" them in case you move to an area with testing, they expand the testing area, some fellow nester may need them, or heaven forbid, you ever sell the car.  Colorado used to allow 25 year old cars to get collector plates which meant you only had to pass the emissions test once when you first got your plates.  Now only cars built in 1975 or earlier are eligible for collector plates, which means cars made since then are tested every year or two.  Pepe is grandfathered in.

Dang, now I want an SX/4....  Before I was looking fo an Eagle, there were several for sale locally, all needing attention, but all under $1000.  Now I can't fond one to save my life.  Probably better that way, so far, the wife only knows about 4 of the 7 and shes not too thrilled as it is.

Luckily the guy just had the thing tested and it passed with a score better than alot of newer cars. He even gave me the test score parer work...I probably will leave the stuff on as long as its functioning properly. Im already having to move for work once if they relocate me again it could spell problems if its in a county that tests.

As for the car, I went out to move it this morning  to move it so I could plow the drive way. All of the Eagles I have owned have been kinda cold blooded so I just assumed since it was -5 degrees out last night it wouldnt want to start...I pumped the gas twice, turned the key and it fired right up and went right to an even idol with no reving or anything to keep it going...I was impressed. Now if I can get this vibration thing squared away I might have a descent car on my hands.

Oh yeah I forgot to mention...I think I have a name for this car...Odie, or O.D. as in over drawn....ya see when I sold my truck through the consignment lot they cut me a check, which I bought "Odie" with...When I went to pay my gas bill today the nice lady informed me my card was declined....So I called the bank and that nice lady informed me that the check from Owners Auto Mart bounced...leaving me a cool $1300.00 in the negative after the bank seized the 700.00 I had in there. My wife was actually pretty cool about me getting the car but when she heard about our bank account she came unglued  :angry9:...I often refer to her as my little pit bull for a reason...Im taking her down there with me tomorrow and Im going to turn her loose on em'

I sicked my wife on the guy today....HE CALLED THE policemen TO HAVE HER REMOVED.. :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: .He gave us the money though! I feel kinda bad cuz it was a bank boo boo....Hes a pretty nice guy down there but he had my wife screaming at him so he got pretty mad. He told us he would cut us another check when the bad one came back in the mail...My wife wasnt having that though she demanded money now and "she wasnt leaving till we had it in hand"....It was a scene for the books for sure!! Any way now that every thing is back on track I took a few hours to clean up the interior. The hardes part was the armor-all kept freezing so it turned into more of a frosting than a shine It cleaned up nice though...the owner must have had a white cat though cuz there was white hair every where. Hey Shane, I know there is a discussion going on in the "What did you to for your Eagle today?" thread about the T4, but I didn't want to hijack that thread too bad.  Anyway, there is a Jeep T5 for sale in Ft Collins for $150, its on the Denver C-List, just search AMC under auto parts.  Maybe you can tell your wife that's what you want for Christmas!

I wonder if that would be a a plug and play kind of thing or if would take some modification...I think tougeagle put one in his and if im not mistaken he had to do some stuff with the mount.....I may give him  a call and see what he would charge to  put it in for me....I was going to hire him to wire up my EFI but that projects a bust now. If anything I would like to have it on hand in case this one does break some day.

Replaced Odie's headlight buckets with some good ones I found in a junk yard a while back...she was looking a little cross eyed. also resprayed the faded black headlight and hood trim, it didnt turn out all that great cuz its a little too cold for the paint to set good, but its better than it was and Its easy to redo...also installed that Spirit grill I had...I think it looks descent and it almost has to stay cuz the grill that was on there is busted clean in half  :-\ (http://i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc377/shanebo79/124283.jpg) (http://i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc377/shanebo79/124282.jpg) (http://i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc377/shanebo79/124281.jpg)

I think tougeagle put one in his and if im not mistaken he had to do some stuff with the mount

I believe tougeagle's originally had a T5 that he swapped for a AX15.

He did alot of fabrication to get it to fit in, I got the opportunity to see it just before he sold it.

Glad the SX/4 fell into the "cute" category.  Even if I had an SX/4 I doubt my wife would ever refer to it as cute.  My wife has never liked any of the AMC products.

I was pretty shocked myself. While she doesnt like it per say she thought it was cute, which was evidently good enough to keep her from blowing a fuse....I just found out that her brother had a hornet hatchback back in the early 80's and she had good memories of that car and this one kinda reminds her of it...Its a good thing he didnt have a ford back then or I would still be in deep  :censored:.

That's funny.  My wife just isn't a fan of any old cars unless it has a rumble seat.  If I had more money and a bigger garage I'd love to find a project that fits that bill.  But something affordable around here that she would like would need more work than I can do.

Hi. Matt here. I just moved to Kenosha WI. I was in a salvage yard here today and there were 3 Eagles there. A Kammback, a wagon, and a 2 door.
I just made the last payment today on a 79 AMC Pacer Limited Hatchback. 258 auto. It will be transported here to Kenosha next spring. 2012 is gonna be a fun year.
Excellent score on the SX/4 sport. Looks really nice. -Matt.

I love Kenosha...you think for being the home of AMC you would see more around up there but I guess the WI. winters and road salt has claimed the lives of most of em.

Took the old bird down to colorado springs to my buddy..about 30 miles one way. My buddy got the wild idea of going to a restaraunt up in denver...I was a little nervous but she handed the 220mile round trip pretty good....minus the vibration.

that vibration could be caused by a bad front half shaft.

Hey Shanebo,  I was wondering....  Would you like to trade my SX/4 for one of your Eagle Wagons?

If so (and I really hope you are interested)  when/where? ;D

It really adds to the "cool" factor.....literally. being a non ac with a black interior it makes a huge differnce keeping the temp down...I think it gives the car a much sportier look too....if you live in a hot climate I would certainly recommend it.

Tinting a vehicle is one of the first things I do to a newly acquired vehicle. It's one of the easiest ways to improve the looks. Well done! It sits the grey very well!
