Title: Half shafts again
Post by: mramc on November 29, 2011, 07:25:15 PM
I was over at my friend Mark today picking up my 83 Eagle. Mark's son has a 82 Eagle station wagon similar to mine he's trying to put new half shaft in . The old ones fit in the wheel hub just fine. The new ones go into about 3/4 of the way and bind and stop. Is there a index on the spines or is it a poor remanufactured  half shaft ? LRDaum

I'm assuming the half-shaft looks really nice and shiny. With that, I believe the wheel bearing might have some rust or other foreign objects stuck where the axle and bearing are supposed to meet. This is why I have a really nasty habit of undoing the wheel bearing from the steering knuckle any time I need to replace a half-shaft on a side I've never worked on. 30 years? ::)

They probably sold him the wrong axles or they were misboxed. Count the splines to see. I got a set shipped in for a '93 Eagle when I ordered '83

I went through 5 before I got one that would fit.  There was no discernible difference between the ones that did not fit and the old one that came out, including checking with a micrometer.
I now buy new ones.  They're not much more expensive and no core deposit to worry with.
