Title: 86 Eagle intermittent wiper switch problem
Post by: marty on November 16, 2011, 07:24:23 PM
Wipers on my Eagle will randomly just stop working.  Hard to t/s.  I usually use intermittent and it would just stop after a time.  Switching to low or high would also be inop.  Most recently I just turned them on and off a couple of times and then they wouldn't come on again.  After sitting for a while they will work again.  I was thinking that the intermittent module had overheated, but the last time I only used them a few times and it was manual turning them on and off.  Any way to check if it's the switch or the module?  Are they purchased seperately or as a unit?  Just purchase one for an 80's f150 truck?  Thanks.

Could be the grounding ring on the switch to the dash too.

I vote ground at switch or wiper motor.

Any AMC intermittent wiper black switch box will work. I have one from a 77 Matador Wagon and it works! AMC apparently didn't change the design of the intermittent switch box and plug in. It's  aplug and play. When my intermitttent switch quit working, it was the black box and the new box had to be grounded good.

Full size Jeeps @ '76 and newer use them too till the dash changed in '88ish.

where exactly is this black box?  my wipers have no intermittent at all and now only work on high speed.

High speed only usually means the ground wire at the switch is not connected. I've never had to ground the box itself in the installs I've done. The ground from the switch was sufficient.

I bet many of us learned about that black wire the same way.

OK, finally got to looking at mine (rained and I had NO wipers).  Now I'm really baffled.  I have a ground that comes off of the switch but it has a spade connector and connects to the fixture for the wiper light holder.  Messed around with removing the spade connector as well as the push in light and it seemed to confirm the ground info as the wipers would work in low/high w/o the ground but the intermittent would only work with the ground connected.  Cleaned up the grounds and put dielectric grease on them and thought I would be good to go...not so fast...still would not turn on intermittently.  Found that if I messed with the ground I could hear some sort of zzt noise in the switch, so I figure it's probably the switch.  I do have a 'black box' but it doesn't seem to have a ground.  Checked the wiper motor and there isn't a seperate ground on it either.  Looked on the Rock Auto website (nothing listed for local Autozone or Oreilys) using an 86 Ford F250.  Listed a number of switches that looked the same(Ford pn 1572A), anyone have a pn for the switch?  If it's the black box, anyone know where one can be purchased?  Thanks.

Haven't found a replacement yet that's still available. Even Ford stopped making the box.

Find on the auction site everynow and then. If it is possible to see a Matador switchs with the black box. They are made for and cross over to our Eagles, concords, etc. I used a Matador switches and works fine.  aJayson
