Title: Tachometer added
Post by: vangremlin on October 23, 2011, 08:00:06 PM
I added a Sunpro Power Curve Tachometer to Pepe today.  It fits nicely in the little cubby hole where most cars have air conditioning vents.  These units were made in the 90s but no more.  I got mine (brand new) off of evilbay for a really good price.  Pictures below, along with a link to a video.  I like it but I now realize that most of my driving is in the 1000 - 2000 rpm range, so watching the tach is not all that exciting.

:rotfl:  I waited about a month for this one to show up on evilbay.  I also talked to a guy online that has one for sale, but he won't be able to pick it up until Christmas.  Let me know if you're interested in it.

I thought the same thing after I installed mine. Most of my driving is between 600-1200 rpm, and I have a 8000 rpm tach, so the needle doesn't move too much.

Thanks Shane! Yes, that's an oil pressure gauge.  I added it when the one in my floor console started doing wacky stuff.  Its stuck on there with velcro.  Eventually I'm going to move it to the floor console and replace all the factory originals with aftermarket gauges.

Need to change the curve to max out at like 5K though.  I think metal would shoot out the exhaust at 8K   ;)

You can choose 4-6-8 cylinders.  I might change it just so I get further up the curve!

I think you mean more like 2K. Chunks of vaporized metals would catch fire and fly out at 5K. A few months back when the transmission killed itself I remember roaring across an intersection at 2500RPMs and the car just crawled across like an airplane(yay fan?). I don't know what it is about these cars but I always suspect the tach is wrong because the engine RPMs are always so low compared to how the 390 engines in my trucks roar to life. Timing tool says it's right and I blazed home tonight doing 1200RPMs at the very fastest. Is it some attribute of the AMC straight 6 or is it just the guys that have an automatic transmission married to it that make the redline appear so low?

I don't normally run over 3500RPM.  I've done 4500 with no ill effects but it scares the heck out of me.  The 258 is a tough lottle sucker.  I think my 350 Chevy self destructs at 4000
