Title: my new eagle needs some help
Post by: big_iron on October 15, 2011, 09:25:35 AM
so my new eagle is needing a few more odds and ends than i originally thought but i still love my new 85 sedan so i dont mind working on it lol. so far just by driving it home last night it looks like:

suspension needs gone through and upgraded (want it stock hight but dont like the feel of being in a boat! lol)

carb needs cleaned or rebuilt bad

i want to upgrade the headlights

the seat belts are dead

and may have small trans problem (it drove fine but i couldnt tell if it was shifting and seemed to be reved pretty high for an auto???)

needs brakes adjusted

does anyone have any tips before i start? especially on the tranz and suspension? i dont plan to go off road with this one (but looking for another already :) ) so dont need any crazy suspension on it.  any input would be greatly appreciated

Check for the presence of a trans kickdown rod underneath the carb.

You will have to get this sorted with your better half:
Hobbies cost money and if your hobby is the almighty AMC Eagle you should be prepared to spend some.
Talking about spending money: get yourself a TSM or the MR251, it will save you money in the long run.
The seatbelts are gravity operated, pulling them quickly won't lock them, you will have make an emergency stop to test them.

TSM = Technical Service Manual. It's the factory shop manual. MR251 is what AMC titled the book. It covers all the mechanical systems. The body is covered in a separate manual.

The TSM was available from our very own store here on the Forum but unfortunately the store is closed.  We hope the closure is temporary.

Ok, I am assuming you have an automatic transmission, First thing I would do is give the thing a complete overhaul, IE new oil, flushed and Filter. I would also check all your linkages and make sure you don't have any that are bent. Seatbelts, I think you can swap that out in a pinch, As for your seats you may have to do some checking around, Until someone here has built a bracket to accept most seats minus the rails. **Shrug** Haven't messed with seats yet. OR I live in eastern oregon and know a pretty decent upholsterer here, B&B Upholstery. Good guys.

Too bad.  Mavericke could probably have helped if close enough.  He is just a few miles south of Galesburg.

so while finding all the hidden rust on my bird i also found out the kick down linkage (between the carb and linkage to the tranz) was just hanging. tried to  :censored: rig it on there and its not working so now i need to find one.
